Hi All,

A question to Alex in particular, but to any other contributors close enough to the new exhaust camshaft design.

Analysing what is different about the new camshaft design from Alex's photo's to make it inherently more robust, I can see that the drive boss at the end is a slightly larger diameter and marginally thicker, but insufficient in itself to provide the robustness required without material changes

What I think I also notice is a change of colour of the boss and the camshaft end face. My impression is that the new camshaft drive boss is a high carbon steel component that has been heat shrunk/pressed onto the end of the cast iron camshaft and "located" . This most certainly would give the camshaft the design integrity it requires.

Contributers views re the above would be appreciated.

The camshaft broke on my FL2 last week, 2007, TD4, 100k Kms, automatic. I originally posted on a different forum at http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?s=b2f6c1...opic=82212 before I found this excellent topic started by Alex.
The local mechanic has stripped it & I'm going to order parts from the UK (70% cheaper!). Would the new 'beefed-up' camshaft design fit in my cylinder head or I need to order the same weaker ones? Part Nos. LR021913, LR021914. FL2, 2007, Diesel, auto, 100k Kms

My car is a 2007 and 90K km, no issues yet but I plan to replace both camshafts. I had ordered the parts from this website: http://eshop.original-teile.de/. They have the lowest prices, even lower than in UK. On the cardboard it's writed that camshafts are made in Germany, so maybe this is the reason for the good price.

To check the latest release of some parts, use www.famousfour.co.uk. But it seems that LR021914 and LR021913 are the latest and the greatest . I also ordered these two parts.

Happend to me also on monday. Cruising at 2000rpms up a rather steep hill at 70km/h it just died

Which is your VIN (last 6 digits) to see if it fits the pattern, please? Thank you!

I was worried about the VIN because your profile tells MY2008.
But, if you say VIN H03xxxx, then it can't be MY2008...

Better late then never, here is an update

It took the workshop 4 weeks to gather the "special" tools needed fullfill the repair. First day back on the road the car went into limp home mode and my HawKeye told med P0299 was the cause.

Garage was clueless and wanted to change sensors, I refused and blamed mounting errors. After many hours under the car I found a small leakage on the inlet manifoil, back to the garage. They agreed and took it of and changed the o-rings, everything OK

Now my rear diff is broken, new one on the way from Equicar. Whats next?

My 57 plate Freelander2 has just done 80,000 miles and the camshaft has shattered! The good thing is the fuel pump has not seized Just hoping the good luck continues and all of the camshaft is retrieved ....

What with this and a fuel sender unit issue last year (also an issue for 57 plate vehicles) I am seriously going off Freelanders for good!!

Anyone have any good reviews of a good little 4x4 vehicle like a Suzuki Swift or similar (must be reliable!!!!)

Are these problems restricted to 2007 models and is it a mileage/ wear issue?
I'm supposed to be buying a 2009 - 58plate with 60k this weekend and don't want to be changing an ultra reliable car for a money pit

Got a 2008 08 plate with 94k on the clock.
Faults have been:
Aircon pump clutch - noticed during first service by dealer, and fixed as part of service.
Power steering - rack, pump, and reservoir all changed under warranty.
Abs sensor - off road damage.
Fuel tank sender(s) - possible accident damage - was rammed up the rear.
Air con radiator - off road damage.
Horns - off road damage.
Door trim - off road damage.
parking sensors not working - jet washed to death after off roading.

There is a theme here, heavy off road use, with a total lack of mechanical sympathy will cost you, but boy is it fun.

The most reliable Land Rover I have ever owned.

When it comes to the fuel pump, I fill up with whatever diesel I can get when the yellow light comes on - supermarket, motorway services, and anything in-between, just change the filter every 15K.

If the cost of repairs is bothering you, maybe you should look at the fuel economy first, as this will FAR outweigh any repair costs. 90K at 30mpg and £1.4 per litre works out at over £19k in fuel in 4 years Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Has anyone on the forum with an early freelander 2007/2008 replaced the exhaust camshaft with the newer part to prevent this from happening? I have just purchased an early 08 and am interested in how much this would cost to do. Presumably less than the repair if the thing fails.
