If using a motorway you will need to buy and display a "Vignette". Unlike the Swiss 13-month one there is a choice of durations (from memory the shortest is a fortnight). You can get them in service stations at the border. If you use the Brenner motorway, there is a toll AS WELL! Check diesel prices online first - Austrian may be more expensive. Worth going via Luxembourg to fill up en route, but watch the prices there - it's much cheaper to nip off the motorway and find a filling station.
As far as I know, Austria has the same rule as Germany - when turning left or right at traffic lights pedestrians AND cyclists crossing have right of way! This means a cyclist coming up behind you and overtaking on the right has priority, and will expect you to check mirrors and give way as you turn Shocked .
Also, if you are into winter snow you may come across closed roads, or ones where snow chains are mandatory.

Fuel in Germany expensive, & German Autobahns (on the way down) can be busier than their French counterparts.
Some of the driving can be a bit zany, watch out for the drivers overtaking coming towards you. 110 Station Wagon

Absolutely! On the Autobahn the guy in the fast lane can be doing well over 150, he expects you to get out of the way, and there's someone else a few feet behind him! There are people who commute in road versions of F1 cars!
Luckily they are installing more and more speed limits, and the traffic is now so heavy that you rarely get the chance to do much over a ton.
Once you get to Austria the drivers can go a little bit mad on the mountain roads. As Dave says, expect people to overtake on bends, sometimes in both directions at once. Austrians tend to think they are driving F1 cars.
Hey! A bit of national stereotyping that doesn't involve Yorkshiremen...

In practice I find it little different to driving in Germany however try and avoid driving the autobahns on weekends in high summer, Germans go on holiday by car by the million and 25 mile tailbacks are not uncommon. Last summer fuel (diesel) was around 1.35-1.40 euros/litre however i understand it has crept up in price. Filling up in Luxembourg is good advice if it doesn't take you out of your itineray and there are plenty of places in Germany to visit on the way there and back but overall will not save that much out of the total cost so i wouldn't personally go out of my way. If the cost of fuel is that critical you can't afford it! last year we did Essen (my wifes home city) and Nuremburg on the way and Fuessen, Heidelberg and Aachen on the way home from Wolfgangsee. This year we are doing Rudesheim going and Fuessen and Trier coming back. eh tu?
