Caravan Insurance

Hi,

Now shopping around to insure our first caravan, most quotes within £20-30 of each other......except Towergate (Bakers Direct) which are approx 40% cheaper than anyone else (and offer new for old as standard!)

Often when something seems too good to be true.....it often is! So has anyone had any experiences with Towergate?

BTW Towergate are insurance under-righters, and handled my business insurance through a trade association for many years without issue (including one big claim many years ago!) Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

We've stuck with the Caravan Club's own "5Cs" policy for years now, as it seems to give us all the aspects of cover we want. Must admit, though, I've not shopped around too much on price. They were very good at handling our one major claim to date a few years back and that does tend to sway me with insurance. If you know that you get what you pay for when it's needed then it's a big plus point for me. We stay with LV= for the four motor vehicles for much the same reason. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto
Tricia's - 2006 Royal Blue Beetle Cabriolet Auto
Mine - 2014 Vespa GTS 300 Super Sport Matt Black
Ours - 2007 White Bailey Pageant Champagne

Hi,
We have used Caravan Guard for a number of years. They have been willing to price match or undercut others at renewal time when I have mentioned leaving to go to an other insurer.

If someone is 40% cheaper I would read the fine print re policy terms compared to the others. MY13 FL2 SD4 HSE Ipanema Sand, 19" LR sparkle alloys , spoiler, rear camera , LR det. Towbar

Caravan insurance can be a minefield

Caravan Club insurance is 1st class & when you have a van stolen or written of its normally settled within 6 weeks & one phone call ! and valuations are very good !

Caravan club is one of the better ones, but check out the new for old, I think it only works for vans that are no more than 4 or 5 years old but they don't tell you that.

"Old for New" should be dirt cheap - it's "New for Old" that costs the money! Wink 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Caravan Guard, Yorkshire based, always cheaper than the CC when I've checked and don't mess around at claim time. Our van disappeared in the night a few years back on a New for Old policy, a brand new van was on the drive in ten days, it would have been quicker had we not delayed them.

Don't go near E & L.

I have to agree with ad210358 on E&L. Used them once never again. Censored

Can I just ask a quick qyestion on this subject re the actual cost of insurance (apologies Kola's Kab for hijacking the thread for a moment).

Since getting the Freely and becoming an avid reader of this Forum you folk have tempted me with all your caravanning tales and I am 'toying' with the idea of trying it myself in the future. I am a long way off from buying anything yet, if only because I know the costs don't stop at the van itself.

What would an average insurance be for say a 2-4 berth caravan?

I am a total novice, but would take lessons first before ever going on the road. Joanne

With the caravan club they have other things to factor in

Wheel lock discounts
Tracker discounts
ATC discount (towing stability system)
No claims discount
Where you store it discount
Alarm discount
Caravan club towing lessons discount

The value of the caravan but about £200-300 shouldn't be far off Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Hi,

Interestingly, the CC quote I received (tad over £300, and not new for old), gave no discount for the hitch lock, wheel clamp, or factory fitted alarm! In fact they stated the only security device that attracts a discount is a tracker, and then only if a monitoring subscription is maintained! But they stated that if the caravan was stolen with out the use of the above, the claim would be invalid!

A 20% 'no claims bonus' (this is our first van), was offered as an introductory offer for joining the club, however! Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

Caravan and Camping Club have an insurance service at www.clubcareinsurance.com
I used this for my insurance and i'm pretty sure it came in at under £200 for a new 4 berth. Discounts for tracker/locks/storage etc.

Thanks LoP,

Caravan & Camping Club have just quoted much nearer the £200 than £300! So we will probably go with them, thanks for the link! Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)
