Is the MPG increase between MY2010 & MY2011 really that

The wife and I are looking to switch from 2 cars to one and we're leaning towards getting a Freelander 2010/2011 at the moment. I realise the engines changed between those model years but the MPG improvements seem really quite large. Can anyone comment about the real world MPG for MY2010 and MY2011 models? We're primarily interested about urban mileage - 26.4 to 32.5 is quite a difference for stated mpg. I'd be worried that a MY2010 would only get very low 20s in urban London driving when the MY2011 might get high 20s. Both of our cars at the moment only get low 20s (diesel 3.0 X5 and 1.6 Cooper S) and we'd like something a bit better.

wrong car for mpg expect about 28-29 for london driving total nightmare! Use the tube! Razz When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

Is the 28-29 for a MY2010 or MY2011 though? High 20s is OK for us tbh. The X5 does low 20s as is but my wife wants something smaller. The Mini is embarrassing for it's engine size though. 22mpg from a 1.6 litre petrol is ridiculous!

My wife's commute is about 13 miles in 45 minutes across South London so avoiding central but with quite a bit of stopping/starting. I'd really like to try to work out if the 2011MY Freelanders' mpg is actually that much better than the 2010MY Freelanders or if the significant mpg increase or if they're mainly just made up numbers to please CO2 emission brackets.

If you went for a manual, a 2010 model would come with stop/start. Some members have claimed to have seen a rise in fuel economy. I have a 2011 SD4 auto, which achieves around 34mpg. That's on motorway blasts and around town. I love mine, and i didn't buy it for fuel economy. It's very comfortable and easy to drive.

Im sure other members will help you out.

Hi,
Our MY2010 can achieve anything up to 46mpg on a long run of mixed motoring! (TD4-e)

When being used for very short runs (every other week actually), 32-34mpg is easily obtainable

Not so sure there was that much improvement with the 2011 models? Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

My 07 manual used to average around 33-34 on a mix of country and town driving. My 11 manual averages around 36 - 37 on a mix of country and town driving and over 40 on an extended run.
On a recent 250 mile journey the SD4 I was driving managed 39.2 mpg on mostly motorways at the speed limit where possible but not above. Claimed combined for an SD4 is 40.4 so not far off.

In my experience the mpg of 2011 models and later is better than the mpg of pre-2011 models and while the official figures are optimistic there is a noticeable improvement with the 150/190 bhp engines over the earlier 160 bhp engine.

I would suggest that if fuel economy is of particular concern to you, don't buy a Land Rover. I love my vehicle for its breadth of ability and performance. If I wanted good fuel economy I'd drive a diesel supermini.

SD4s are supposed to be more powerful and more efficient but I think general consensus is that there's not a huge difference. Manuals will achieve higher MPG.

I've averaged 29.55mpg over the last 4,300 miles in a TD4 auto, mostly short trip rural driving.

I recently swapped a 59 plate for a 13MY, and the MPG difference is very significant - to me anyway. I reckon about 8-10 MPG difference depending on circumstance.

England 2011 Freelander 2 TD4_e XS Manual Zermatt Silver

We have a my11, td4 manual, round town on daily commute we get 30-33 pretty consistently , on a run doing 65 to Oxford on Saturday we averaged 51.2 including queuing . So pretty good there, also ved is £170 on ours compared to £215 on the 10my with the 160bhp. Ours is the 150bhp, we bought this model purely for the mix of towing ability and fuel economy. My11 freelander 2, xs, Manual, 18" hse sparkles, sidesteps, privacy, zermatt silver metallic, almond nutmeg alacantra, twin electric towbar

Gone my09 xs D3

Re: Is the MPG increase between MY2010 & MY2011 really t

I average 32 mpg, mainly short journeys, 7 miles each way. This was averaged over a month of driving.
On a long motorway run (70+), achieving 38mpg.
58 FL2 td4s. Landy has now gone.

09 TD HSE Auto...30.1mpg. Doing a (fairly brisk) lap of Manchester's motorways everyday as the commute, and some city use now and again. This figure has been consistent over 23,000 miles in the last 9 months.

Thanks all so much for the replies. Also thanks to those who messages me too - I couldn't reply though due probably to being too new a member.

We've decided we'll save the money and get an older TD4. I'd love the newer engine but every penny saved goes towards our new kitchen so we're trying to be sensible! I worked out that the actual cost difference per year in fuel isn't actually that much anyway - we may do a lot of urban driving but we don't do that many miles. Probably only around 8000 a year which is probably only a couple of quid a year difference.

I might look into remapping to increase fuel consumption on the older TD4s though but that's a thread for another day.
