You'll hardly get any damage with 17'' wheels due to the profile of the tyre.

A few years ago they came about on RRSport, one tried them and they kept coming out at the joint, whipping the side of his car, I believe they the tried to redesign them to make them stay put a little better but not heard since Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis |

I suppose they would be less liable to come out of they could be fitted without a joint and made diameter specific for each size of wheel and stretched over somehow to fit, but then they would cost more as with the jointing process one length of strip fits all.
