Alloy Wheel balance weights

My next door neighbour just received her new freelander 2 and I noticed that the alloy wheels have balance weights fitted to wheels, the only problem that I see is that they are fitted to the outside rim.
I did not think that this was still done as it can damage the alloy wheel, please give me your views.

Mine has balance weights on the outside of the rim too.

If the factory send them out like that I'm sure it's not a problem.

I am going to contact landrover and see what they say about it and I will keep you posted, how long have you had the FR2

I dont know how you feel but I think the balance weights will mark the alloys through time, you can get the stick type to fit to the inner wheel to prevent damaging the outer wheel rim.

Just to say my previous Honda CRV had the same type of weights fitted. They will mark the wheel a little over time but they seem to stay attached better

On RRS and D3 there were a lot of problems with the wheel balance on brand new cars. They used to leave the production line with them on the inside, but the adhesive wasn't strong enough and the weights fell off right at the end of the line. When they lifted the gratings to have a look there were 1000's of lead balance weights under them! So now they put them on the outside so at least you should notice if they have fallen off. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

To balance a wheel properly, especially one with a large offset, balance weights should be fitted to both inner and outer sides of the wheel still pining for my 3dr, no removeable hardtop, no drop glass tailgate, no roof rack, no pockets everywhere to stow all that man kit

Hi npinks, thanks for reply, there are some small black marks and like a small streak of what looks like rust! I have tried Autoglym wheel cleaner and I hesitate to try anything abrasive. Freelander 2 - SE
