Whining - poss Turbo(?)

I have a fairly noisy whining coming from engine transmission(?) It happens when revving the engine whilst stationary or accelerating in each gear. It gets louder when warmed up and seems to be worse when cornering. Anyone any thoughts on this? It is a Freelander Auto, '57 plate with 75K miles. Incidentally, rear diff already changed out last year.

Hi,
Just a thought......
Not on the Freelander but I had exactly the same symptoms on my Jag (2.2D ) about 18 months ago. I was convinced it was the turbo, but my then very good local indy correctly diagnosed it to be the AC compressor. Not the cheapest to replace but a fraction of the cost of the turbo!

Make sure the AC is turned off (completely) and see if you still hear it! Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

Is the pitch of the whine directly proportional to the engine speed? Or the road speed?

If it's proportional to road speed that might suggest transmission or other drivetrain components rather than the engine.

If it's proportional to engine speed that suggests it's engine related but probably not the turbo.

If it's proportional to engine power (i.e. accelerator) setting, but with a lag, then it's probably the turbo. (I.e. with a turbo whine you can often hear it rise and fall as you press and release the accelerator.

.....could be a hole in the intercooler, they are fitted in a vulnerable position and prone to stone damage.

Doubt if it is the Turbo, if its doing it when stationary, I had a Turbo pipe go once (not on a Freelander) it would not show when stationary as you couldn't get enough load on the engine, drive it down the road and you could hear it p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Sounds like the steering pump, or possibly worn belt adjuster. Could also be the alternator. As yours is an older model it's most likely the steering (tip - update your profile and your model/year will appear when you hover over the landrover symbol by your name (try it on mine!))

Just check the passenger seat. Most of the whining in mine comes from there. Rolling with laughter

Hi - I am immensely grateful for all of the advice offered, which to me, as a total non-techno, is brilliant. I will look into each suggestion in turn, having already tried the AC and discounted as no change when switched off, but thanks anyway.
Once I find out what the problem is I will update again.

I go along with Past master.
If it is the steering pump, it's caused by a blockage in the resevoir. If you get it fixed quick enough, a new resevoir and a back flush might fix it. That's what happened with mine and the symptoms sound the same as yours.
Keep on driving the car and it could cost a new pump and steering rack, ouch Big Cry

Get it looked at asap Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Hi to all those who tried to help me.
The problem was the power steering pump - had it replaced (it was US), plus replaced the reservoir. Total hit on my pocket was £300.00 incl.
Thanks again for your contributions

Sort of sorry I was right, as it has cost you! But it's a common fault on the early ones (had mine done under extended warranty).
