Apart from the obvious LHD/RHD difference, is there any notable differences between the freelanders either side of the Atlantic? Any different safety regulations etc. that affect the design?

Well the American LR2 is more powerful, comes with a 230hp 3.2 233hp 2.0l petrol, not the 2.2 diesel that the UK get. (Thought Americans scoffed at the phrase EcoBoost but looks like I was wrong)

Plus they have different rules regarding rear indicators/blinkers so I'd assume they are different in the USA.

There are probably way more obvious differences but those are the only two I can think of.

The new MY13 US models come with a Si4 engine, which I believe is a 2.0T. The i6 has been discontinued.

Yanwoo - Tyre Pressure Monitoring is apparently now law in U.S. on all SUV's. Mine has 19" alloys which were destined for the U.S. market but were fitted by U.K. dealer as there was an excess of them lying around.

TPM sensors were installed in each wheel but I was reliably informed from fellow forum members that the cars computer in U.K. spec doesn't have the software/configuration installed to read the sensor signals. Plus wifey snapped one off at the garage one day whilst checking the pressures a week after we got it. LR replaced it for free.

Consequently, changed all four of the wheel sensors to normal good old fashioned rubber ones last week when I got new rears fitted as the sensor type valves are known for corroding and snapping off.

US version doesn't have a locking gas (sorry petrol) door

US version doesn't have electric folding mirrors

Also my 2008 doesn't have the garage door opener in the rear view mirror (Homelink?)


There might be more differences but these are the three that I wish my LR2 came with

In the UK the passenger seat is fitted with a simple switch which detects if someone is sitting there or not for the Airbag system and the Seat belt warning, this can be triggered if the Missus has a heavy enough handbag and puts it on the passenger seat. Of course there is no need for the drivers seat as it is assumed this will always be occupied. The driver does get a switch on the track that can detect if the seat is further forward than a given point.

In the US, both the seats are fitted with Occupant Classification Sensor Systems which use a silicone filled Bladder piped up to a pressure sensor to effectively weigh the Occupants

USA spec vehicles have different headlights with orange inserts, they have no locking fuel filler flap no locking wheel nuts ( they must be very honest in America) they all have TPMS. They have enhanced carbon can filters and fuel tanks for emmission regs. They have a different AC system and also have different park brake systems

There's nothing visibly different from the cabin but the ac hard lines are different and the hp and lp ports are inverted for USA models ( no idea why)
