I tried to find a crashed Halifax up in Kielder a few weeks back but as we got further up the hill the snow was still lying and the wreck was buried, we knew we where in the right spot as we had a GPS but the snow obliterated it |

I grew up in Snaith, East Yorkshire. There was an airfield nearby. It has a nice memorial garden there. The airfield had two claim to fames, Joe Poh was stationed there, he was shot for his part in the great escape. The airfield was also home to the most severely damaged bomber to return from an operation. The aircraft collided with another bomber resulting in a large part of the forward lower fuselage being destroyed taking the navigator and bomb aimer with it.

Vulture engines, they look like a rotary design, later Halifax bombers had Merlin engines fitted.

Actually I'll correct myself. The term Rotary is correct in connection with aero engines where the cylinders rotate and the crankshaft is fixed to the airframe. |

This plane could have been with 138 Squadron, a special duties unit operating out of Tempsford http://www.tempsford-squadrons.info/ who used Whitley's, Lysander's,Halifax and later on Stirling's and were flying Lincoln's when they were disbanded in August 1950. My uncle Bob (Sgt W. C. Evans was a Dispatcher flying in Whitley Serial No. T.4166 and was lost on 27/28 March 1943 returning from "Operation Watercress" which was to drop Dutch Agents near to Steenwijk. The MOD records surmise that the plane came down in the sea and only one body was recovered. The ironic part of all this is that my Uncle volunteered to go on this operation as a stand-in for a fellow air craftsman who was sick. The plane near CG will be an early Halifax with Rolls Royce Vulture engine, this was a 16 cylinder engine, basically four, six cylinder engines mounted radially in a X24 configuration around a common crankshaft, then later the Merlin engine was then fitted which was a V12 unit.
