2011 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Stornoway Grey
Worn Steering Wheel

I have a MY11 SD4 GS which I've had from new. Back end of last year at about 27k on the clock I noticed the finish on the steering wheel (not leather) was looking "worn". I was going to go to the dealer about it, but as it was Xmas time and the car was due for a service end of Jan, I left it until then.
I reported it to the dealer who promised to look into it.
Apparently photos where sent off to LR and after repeated phone calls / visits back there I 've now been told the warranty claim has been rejected. - "It can't be a manufacturing fault, there must be some external influence". Dealer asked me if I'd used any cleaning products on it, which I haven't (I hate slippy steering wheels).

I now have an immaculate looking 20month old car with 34k on the clock and a steering wheel that looks like it's done 134k.

Anyone heard of anything like this?
I don't want to just accept the warranty claim rejection, but would like some advice, further ammunition.

Will try and post photos when I get chance.

Cheers

Mines just the same. Has been for ages.
Can't be bothered to change it as it's still the same c Censored p steering wheel. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

pricey, but very nice Thumbs Up

A lot depends on your hands, I don't do owt so my hands are soft, a mate of mine repairs dents, has skin like leather and his wheel is pretty knackered.

I fitted a leather cover from the ones listed above,

the previous owner had used a steering wheel clamp thing, it had worn the wheel in one place,
all fixed for £14 and 20 mins with a needle.

Lucky Duck or should it be unlucky, sorry to hear about your steering wheel.

Bobtail, thanks for your information - I use a steering lock and had not really given a thought to possible damage, will have a look at this to make sure that I do not encounter same damage!

Cheers! Thumbs Up 'There is thunder' then 'There is the warble of a V8'

I have the same problem also on a MY11 SD4 GS. It's been like that from new, probably a bad batch of steering wheels. I've not worried too much about it.....may be I'll give it a go next time it goes near a stealers

my daughter had a Ford Ka since new, a limited edition with a nice blue leather steering wheel.

after about 5 years and 40K miles the points where she held the wheel looked like they were melting.

I thought it was a reaction to some kind of hand cream, etc but she said no.

she now has a new mini with a lovely leather sports multifunction wheel, so here's hoping it lasts a bit longer !!

Iain

ps I suppose it is a difficult thing to cover with warranty as so many things can affect it.

@ Lucky Duck
As I have the same car as yourself with the similar mileage and my steering wheel is still immaculate, I'd like to see some photo's of what the damage is.

Been away a bit recently. Anyway, an update.

Dealer supposedly took photos and sent to LR who eventually knocked back the warranty claim saying I must have used some cleaning product on the wheel which affected the surface. - It only ever gets a dry cloth. Then they said it had reacted to something on my hands. I ask for copies of the photos but they couldn't supply them. (seems a little strange)

I refuse to accept this so I was told to take it to LR customer care. They are currently awaiting a report back from the warranty department.

I expect to hear back from them next week. Watch this space.
If I get opportunity I'll try and post some photos
.
