Could I ask anyone who has a MY2013 car with the DVD player to just stick a DVD through and see what the video quality is like?

Mine has a very odd colours, with the lower half of the screen being very pink and there seems to be some interruption to the signal to the screen.

I just wanted to see whether this was common to all cars, or whether it was something that is wrong with mine in particular.

I don't have a MY13, nor do I have a DVD player in it but.... I'd say yours is faulty.

Looks like you're getting assistance. In my MY13, i've tried a DVD and the picture is uniform and crystal clear - no issues. Sounds like your screen is on the fritz Toyota Rav4 2.0

Interestingly it's fine on older DVDs, but I have the odd problem with newer ones (Skyfall, Avengers) so perhaps there's a change in how they're produced?

Silly but obvious question...... You are using genuine DVDs and not pirate copies or something that looks genuine from a boot sale?

Are all the new models capable of video playback now, or is it an extra/top the range feature?

I expect that is just the XS, Dynamic and HSE/HSE lux that can play DVDs. As S and GS models don't have the touchscreen.
