Okay - from personal experience, some dealers are now offering discounts - something in the order of 3.5% - some others are still refusing, but if you push very hard, you may be able to get something. My advice is to ring around a few - there was a recent post on this thread which was subsequently removed which led to a very fruitful discussion for me!

Most dealers are keen to hit their March targets and may be a little more flexible if you're ready to order for delivery soon.

There are also some brokers (ie. orangewheels) which seem to be able to offer around the same level of discount. I have no experience of actually buying through one though, just enquiring.

Any money you get off a vehicle will only show on the used sale price. looking for the money off and getting dealers to discount will bring down the price of your vehicle when you come to sell so so much. Cheaper is not allways the best way to go, may mean you get a poor sales serv..

Why would a discount be reflected in the used price when you come to pex it ??? Makes no sense.

If I got one FOC would that mean I would have to give it away when I wanted to chop it in ??

Also getting a discount would not lead to poor dealer service... unless you have a bad dealer in the 1st place.

Find yourself a good dealer (one that understands the D3 / RRS) and you should be fine when service / niggles occur.

Can’t agree with that statement at all,

Getting a good discount will have no bearing on part exchange prices at all and if it did you would just go to a different dealer??

The motor trade has made a good living for many years from charging as much as they can get away with, so now we have the upper hand (in that you can use the internet to your advantage) we should make the most of it.

You can pay full screen price and still get lousy service so it makes no odds.

if dealers are discounting vehicles all over the uk then the price will drop drop and drop even more.
this for example my discovery 3 tdv6 Hse 06 plate cost List 43745 got for £41 book value now £36250 BUT a dealer in the midlands now fighting for sales is selling a brand new one for £35995 How can mine be worth 36k when 6mths old wuth 7000 miles on when a new one costs LESS. so who is going to buy mine for sure not a accountant.

Agree with Neilcav.

The internet helps get a good deal when buying new but it also alerts to the availability of deals across the country that we wouldn't have known about a few years ago. This would drive down used prices if the market is flooded with discounted cars.

I think it is a good feeling at first to get a deal and understand why people do it. You think you are saving pound notes and less coming out of your pocket. But the £1000 or £2000 or even £5000 you get off if you shop around and play dealers from one to another they will keep going less and less to get customers. They will work for numbers rather than making money. This is what kills the market and the price on 12 mth old vehicles.

supply and demand will set the sell and re-sale price points.

I may agree with what you are saying but I for one am not going to be the mug who pays full price just to keep others p/ex prices up

It's the way of the world I'm afraid and I won't buy anything now unless i get the cheapest available price.

understand what your saying but how do you know when you have got the cheapest price poss. is it after you have had a few quotes and go for the best or when you get to the price you are happy to part with.

I think the fact that you're reading this forum means that you're fairly au fait with the Internet - my estimate would be that this is a lowish percentage of all car buyers out there.

Therefore, the availability of a good 'internet' deal will be applicable for a small group of discerning customers, who are prepared to travel if necessary for a good deal. The majority of people will just go to their local dealer and do the best deal they can.

If certain dealers are prepared to discount, for whatever reason, then perhaps the pricing wasn't quite right to start with to compete with other marques and models.

If what neilcav says is correct, then why are John Lewis seeing healthy sales growth when many of the products they sell are available at a lower price on the Internet? - the answer to this one is good customer service. The car market is no different - the dealers just don't like it because for once the consumer has the upper hand and access to more information much more easily. Perhaps this is a great catalyst for dealers putting more into customer service than they may have in the past.

Finally, we all know that when models get to be a year or two old, then the manufacturers start to do very heavily advertised deals - all we're doing now as early adopters is ensuring we don't get hit by that happening in the future.

Well, that's my view - (and I'm comfortable with it)

BG you're spot on, the purchase price is but one part in the decision where to buy. Just as important is the continuing service from the dealer. My dealership might be a little more expensive than the cheapest, but the back up is great and worth paying for IMO D4 HSE Lux for me
