Cyclists want drivers to be automatically at fault...

I have just seen this story on the BBC:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-22155209

Now, I have a lot of sympathy for cyclists out on the open road. The last time I was on a main road on a push bike I was terrified. However, A lot of them are idiots and a lot of them seem to have a holier than thou attitude.
They're worse for that than motorcyclists (and I am one so I know).

Whatever, how can it ever be fair to automatically blame the driver of a motor vehicle if some eejit on a bike hits you? I just don't get it. Can anyone explain?

Stuart

I'm a bus driver and, in the eyes of a cyclist, I'am the anti christ. I try to give cyclists as much room as possible I also accept that at times I could be a bit more patient.

When I used to do the Edinburgh route they would lean against the coach at red lights, some even hang on to the back to save a bit of energy.

There is fault on both sides, but some cyclists can't see it and think the highway code don't apply to them.

Only once have I ever seen a cyclist get what he deserved, I stopped my bus at a set of roadworks in a small village, the cyclist came down my inside and refused to stop, as there was on coming traffic he took a shortcut through the roadworks rather than go round, and to my joy his front wheel got caught in a recently dug trench straight over the handle bars he went Rolling with laughter. I thought that stuff only happened on you've been framed. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

I don't usually tar a group of people with the same brush, as it were, but cyclists are really starting to annoy me and it's this behaviour that's giving me that impression. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

This was something that was going through the EU a few years back, the general gist was if a cyclist doesn't like you because your driving a Porsche or you have a sticker saying I Love Buses, he can decide to ride into you and you get blamed automatically. That sounds like the typcial Daily Mail view and it seemed to die a bit of a death but with EU Politicians, you never know.

I cover a couple of thousand miles a year on my bike and there are points on both sides. there seems little point getting all shouty about it, I've seen aggressive cycling and I've seen aggressive driving I've suffered road rage as a driver and as a cyclist. There cannot be any justification for the cyclist always being in the right, and vice versa. A bit more give and take on our busy roads would help from all partys.
just saying.............

Cyclists should have to pay a road tax and take out insurance before being allowed to go on our roads. They should also have a numberplate attached so they can be traced. They are a menace and take up as much room as a car, try overtaking one and see how much room you have to give them. Ex 2010 Freelander2 GS-e Diesel manual Silver owner

It's just a shame that most car drivers now have absolutely no patience. Does it really matter if it takes a minute until its safe to pass a cyclist? Is it really that hard to give them plenty of room?
Roads were so much nicer when everybody had give and take, when people used indicators, didnt speed everywhere and just relaxed. Very Happy

I have had it both ways too, as a cyclist and in the car. There a number cyclists around that think they own the roads and don't stop at lights and obey other laws regulations etc.
The majority of people cyclists tho are opposite tho, no road rage and just out for a pleasure ride to have fun and enjoy the countryside scenery etc....

I recently got knocked off my bike by a lady in a car who was on the phone and did not stop at the red light I was waiting for. No damage to me, but the bike wheel was mangled, about £375 for a new one. I had the " you shouldn't be on the road you should have tax blah blah blah" really? For your bad driving?

The one that annoys me most is the distance that cars leave between me and them when they overtake, even worse yesterday with 40mph gusts! Then they sometimes give the w Censored r sign as they pull back in. Nice!

As wizking says does it take a few more seconds to think about what you are doing or wait to pass???

I don't know. Based on my experience, it's the cyclists who are impatient. Blasting through red lights and scattering pedestrians. 2013 RR Evoque Pure Tech

I fail to see why a vulnerable road user goes up the inside of trucks that are indicating left and want the driver to be liable when they get hit Confused

As far as I was aware, cyclists are subject to the law whilst using public highways, including speeding etc. They drive me mad when there is a group of them and they cannot be overtaken as there are too many and riding just under the limit, and to overtake would make you commit an offence.

Cyclists should have to have a licence to ride on the road as alot of them don't know the highway code and tend to go straight through red lights! They should have number plate and insurance and pay road tax. end of rant lol When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

Anyone who disagree's with the above post should go and drive in London and then come back and have their say. When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car
