SD4 LE Sport 2011 Fuel Economy

I bought a second SD4 LE Sport 2011 last Thursday with 13,000 mile on it. Land Rover filled the tank for me and I reset the on board computer before setting off. I have 25 mile left in the tank, have not been over 70mph, done fairly long trips and am still only getting 29 mpg? This is quite concerning given on most of the reviews I see people are getting 35 - 40 mpg. I spoke to Land Rover and they agreed this seemed low but blamed the cold weather.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

it all depends on what driving your doing

I have always get about 24mpg out of mine , based on fill up to fill up miles to litres of fuel put in, thats because i mainly town drive, those that achieve higher do longer trips Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I used to do high mileages in mine, 400 miles sometimes 600 miles in a day on the motorways and I was always very pleased with the mpg I got back usually around the 40 Thumbs Up

Cold in Perth, I thought it would be quite warm Confused

Urban driving does tend to kill the SD4 and so does over 70mph, but on average I can get very early 30's with my mixed driving.
Get them to check for brake binding and correct EGR operation.

There are many threads on here with wild claims and some awful figures but no real answers as to why they vary so much.

My last few weeks have been quite urban with an average speed of 28 mph with average fuel of 29 mpg, but I have topped 41 mpg on the motorway driving like a 'namby', so my 32/33 mpg in mixed driving seems about right.

Perth's in Scotland EY Laughing

I have an SD4, it averages around 35 when short tripping and 38+ when longer runs are involved.
An auto really does depend on the driving style though, also worth checking are the handbrake shoes, does the car roll on a gentle incline? sticking shoes may cause low mpg.

Cold starts really hammer the mpg, but you need to feather the right pedal, keep the revs below 2000 just use the torque. We use a tankful a fortnight so mainly short trips around town only a couple of miles or so but we are getting just over 30, I do feel the mpg improves when they change from winter diesel though which will be soon I hope.

2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black

After achieving a running average of 37 - 38mpg over approx 60 000 miles and more recently 39mpg over the last 4500 miles my advice is....
Short shift, rarely exceed 2000 rpm and rely on the torque - not revs. Stick to 70 on the motorways and coast down hill whenever possible. Maintain a steady speed wherever possible.. reduce braking and flow though the bends.

And I didn't bother with the the eco stop/start.

But mine was a manual so most my advice of no use to the auto drivers. But I have a new auto on order so am about to get a shock at the pumps I reckon. Big Cry (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc
(Going) 2013 TD4 GS Auto - Santorini Black with black leather. Cold Climate, UK Lighting & Armrest Packs. Privacy Glass. LR Rubber Mats. Full size spare.
60 000 miles averaging 35mpg

(Gone) 2010 TD4 Manual GS - Stornoway Grey. Sold at 3yrs old & 64k miles. Final average consumption 39.2mpg.

My SD4 seems to average around 31mpg. The on board computer doesn't seem to update the average mpg reading often, as it has stayed the same for a while. Unlike my girlfriends Audi A3 which updates it average mpg reading often depending on your driving style. Hopefully the mpg will increase when I drive through parts of Spain and back through France.

Our 12 XS is averaging around 37-38 mps although the trip is saying 39-40. Live in rural Northamptonshire so 50mph on the A361 into Banbury. 75 in cruise on the motorway. My 07xs that I traded in in January did 5-6 mpg less, driven the same way. the 12 even manages high 26-27 mpg with a 1500kg caravan on the back. Cruising at 60mpg. In fact it runs better at an ilegal 65 as it is up on the torque curve in top. Cruise control with a caravan, whatever next.
