North Korean threats: Real or bluffing?

http://news.sky.com/story/1071264/north-ko...t-us-bases

So yet more threats from the North. This time there is no Vietnam style situation for the Yanks because I can't see ground warfare in a month of Sunday's. The Yanks do their fair share of winding up but this time aren't looking like the one's firing the opening salvo.

So guys, 2 questions:

1: Will Kim Jong Un fire missiles at US bases or is he bluffing?

2: If he did and destroyed some US hardware and killed some troops/civilians, what response do you think the US would give. Steady retaliation or bomb the sh*t out of North Korea? 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

I was in Seoul three weeks ago, eerie sort of normality about the place, the number of anti missile batteries between the city and the DMZ some 30 miles North is amazing, very little will get through.

The amount of work being done between the two capitals is also impressive, there is a very good road between the two along with a state of the art Rail station at Dorasan, ready and waiting for the day they are unified.

The North are certainly capable of firing first, they already have on numerous occasions, two battle cruisers sunk and the attack on YoengPeong island.
America will be very reserved with retaliation because of the links the North have with China and Russia.

Tense times but I believe it is little more than sabre rattling, or lets hope it is..........

Dorasan Rail Station, gaurded and even the ticket office is manned...but no trains

North Korea, we could use the binoculars to watch but I was not allowed up to the wall with my camera as I could see American posts and thus snap them, I was held behind a line.

Road to PyongYang, the cables on the right are wired to explosives in the bridge, if troops from the North advance the bridges will be destroyed.

No I don't think we do, but if they press the button, in retaliation I press my switch, turn my light off and goes to sleep

Or in another way of saying it, we have no control over them so what they do is up to them and I can't control it so why worry Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Hyundai have factories both North and South, generating economic wealth for both sides, the same happens on the Chinese border.
The North is a pawn in a much bigger political game with the unfortunate consequence that millions of people are starving, yet millions do not perish as they do in Africa? We know nothing because we are looking for answers in the wrong place.

If It comes to pushing buttons... the West will lose.. North Korea will win.. This has been the case all along hence why America and its allies have never gone head to head with soivet union or china :

We rely on to much tech fly by wire computer control systems..All are weapon platforms don't work unless they have a computer.. 100% of are planes don't fly with out the computers, tanks don't work with out computers they drive but can't shoot ..

After the berlin wall went down and the west got there hands on russian equipment they found that most of the kit was old tech no computers .

The weak spot is tech EMP strike would wipe the hard ware out..

Plus the ground troops are spread so thin with current ops ..south Korea would be over run with in days..

so let hope it don't come to it.. Iain

Disagree Papa Smurf. Firstly, North Korea doesn't have EMP capabilities (not sure who does) and if they started it by blowing some Americans up, then there's no need to bother with UN sanctions, the US can retaliate and with their firepower, it's goodbye North Korea (non nuclear sense).

If the Koreans developed the capability to fire a Nuke at USA mainland and did so (success or fail), the USA would make Pyongyang glow in the dark. Adios Kim Jong Un.

Let's just hope neither of us get the I told you so speech on this one though! Peace on Earth and all that 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

North Korea got that tech from china and Russia .. Your not getting the point the West can not deploy standard Tech because the weapon platforms are to computer rises... wipe that out none of are equipment would work...

America lost the Vietnam war due to using high tech and fire power.. were not winning afghan high tech agents sticks and stones.. Iain

Currently, North Korea has the capability to launching a ballistic missile high into the atmosphere, but no worries... officials say they have not yet developed a re-entry capability. Well guess what? For an EMP weapon it does not need to re-enter the atmosphere. More troubling is that all of our defensive systems are designed to target a potential warhead as it re-enters. As you will see, this is a recipe for disaster.

A weaponized EMP (bomb) is made to detonate high in the atmosphere. I'm talking hundreds of miles up there. It's possible to use an ordinary nuclear bomb for this. It's very low tech. The explosion releases certain energies that spread out and radiate a large area underneath it. The higher up it happens, the more the radiation can extend beyond the curve of the horizon. The effects, while not radioactive per se, are even more lethal.

The electromagnetic pulse contains enough energy to destroy anything and everything electronic. Think of it like a powerful lightening bolt. And when I say destroyed, I mean burned out and not repairable. But even if your cellphone, radio or computer was still somehow working, there would be no electrical power in the grid -- for a long time. All of the transformers would have to be replaced and new wiring installed. And, of course, the generators themselves would need to be rebuilt. Our cars, trucks and entire infrastructure would be gone -- in an instant.

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapon is far more dangerous and potentially more lethal than a nuclear bomb. We known that the Russians have EMP weapons because of their published (an sometimes not) research and experiments with the technology. And now, of course, we can include China. But really, any nuclear capable nation with an atmospheric delivery system can do this.

"China's military is developing electromagnetic pulse weapons that Beijing plans to use against U.S. aircraft carriers in any future conflict over Taiwan, according to an intelligence report made public on Thursday.
Portions of a National Ground Intelligence Centerstudy on the lethal effects of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and high-powered microwave (HPM) weapons revealed that the arms are part of China's so-called "assassin's mace" arsenal -- weapons that allow a technologically inferior China to defeat U.S. military forces." --Washington Post 7/22/11

A declassified intelligence report, obtained by the private National Security Archive, provides details on China's EMP weapons and plans for their use. Annual Pentagon reports on China's military in the past made only passing references to the arms. Iain

I still think you are wrong. Just as if the top brass in the states haven't thought of EMP and got counter measures/some way of resisting it. North Korea loses hands down if it came to pressing buttons. Afghanistan involves ground warfare which changes things and Vietnam went Pete tong cos of the jungle warfare. North Korea only have a chance if China or Russia offered visible military support and not even they would stoop that low if Korea had fired first. Hope so at least.

If the USA can build stealths etc then they will have counter measures for anything North Korea have in their Arsenal. Plus the USA will have their own EMP to deploy against enemies. 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

Amen to that. These topics can get as contentious as the sabre rattling Laughing

To get back on topic with the first post. I don't think he is bluffing as such but I don't think he is stupid. I think if he was confident of easy victory and plenty of support he would have launched by now. He is contemplating what retaliation he would get.

The USA response would be proportionate to the attack received. If the North went South big time, I think even Russia and China would turn their backs on North Korea. Then it's North Korea vs The World LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

North Korea have a nuclear weapon.........they have EMP, as long as it goes bang at altitude it will generate an electromagnetic pulse, I don't believe anyone knows the extent of how this would work, it depends on too many factors and is difficult to test, US and Soviet tests involved small scale devices, smaller than the supposed device NK has at its disposal.
NK have successfully launched a rocket into orbit, the US state that they (NK) don't have re entry technology, if they (NK) believe in their technology to deliver an EMP then they would not need re entry technology in the fullest sense as pinpoint accuracy would not be needed, as said if it goes bang at altitude, then large scale damage would result.

I do not believe America would retaliate as this would be in direct conflict with China.

Koreans are very proud, they will never accept defeat nor ask for help, they have been brought up with Confucianist principles which differ from principles in the western world, rightly or wrongly their beliefs are at odds with ours, this in itself creates a very difficult scenario.
