Faulty Haldex Unit

2 years old and 27000 miles and my FL2 is having a new Haldex unit fitted.

Problems started about 6 months ago when intermittently i would get what i can only describe as a grinding noise when moving from stationary either forwards or backwards, it would last a couple of seconds and then everything would be fine. It used to happen once every 2 or 3 weeks or so. It got worse in the Winter until January when it was happening virtually once or twice a day. Went to the dealer in February and sods law it never happened but did on a 2nd visit to them. Their initial diagnosis was either the Haldex or a brake issue. I will try and find out further details when I pick it up early next week.

Not come across this issue on the forums - bit worrying considering the age and mileage though Sad

First guess would be a brake issue, but whatever let us know the outcome especially as we have the same car/year and approx mileage albeit mine being lower spec, and at least its under guarantee Thumbs Up

United States 2008 LR2 i6 SE Auto Tambora Flame

This is somewhat common failure that is well documented here in the forum:

"Rear Differential Lower Level Repair
concern of excessive humming noise and or rumble or high pitched whine coming form the rear of the vehicle, diagnosis identifies the noise is coming from the rear differential assembly
Cause: Pinion tail bearing spalling caused by subsurface material deformation. Cause of subsurface deformation is static overload
Parts Required
Description Part Number Quantity
Pinion Tail Bearing - Inner Raceway - Outer Raceway LR023441 x1
Pinion Seal LR023442 x1
Side Shaft Seals LR023440 x2
Collapsible Spacer LR023443 x1
Rubber ring replacement when separating /removing the rear differential from Haldex coupling LR002888 x1
Differential case seal LR030846 x1
Nut LR023439 x1
(Pinion Tail Bearing is Main Bearing At Fault For The Noise)"

It depends on the year of your Landy but tell the dealer to look for Tech Bulletin LTB00342 (Rear Diff Lower Level Repair). Let us know if this info helps.

Now I am confused....

Car booked in for middle of next week for the grumbling noise to be re-examined but strangely the noise has stopped ever since the temperature has got warmer.. any ideas what the problem could be bearing in mind it is obviously temperature related?

did you find out what the problem was?
