dont go over 4.5k theres no need to go over about 3 really When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car |

There is a RPM limit speed programmed inside the ECU firmware, so, in a way, there is no "max safe rev limit".

Same as what the others have said but just to add that my rev counter has indication of 'broken red segments starting at 4200 rpm and changing to solid red at 4800 rpm, for your information.

Agreed, high revs and all that friction bring no performance gain - better to get back down onto the torque curve!

I won't believe that someone could be that foolish... Nevertheless, the syncros in the gearbox will have the time of their life in such situation... |

Seen it done the result was a broken cam-shaft, piston's hitting the valves etc. Total engine rebuild needed, Customer said "you can down shift at speed in a petrol" , Didn't know about diesel engines, not liking to be over revved was what the customer thought when he seen the bill for the engine be-build. |

Actually the auto box did something like that in my TD5! Shifted down to second at 70 going up a sudden hill. My fault for having it on the cruise control I suppose. Presumably didn't exceed the rev limit, but the head gasket blew soon after - not unrelated I suspect. |
