?maximum safe rev limit?

What is the considered safe maximum revs per minute for a td4 2.2 2009 freelander.

The rev counter does not have a red line. I would prefer not to cause any damage. I do not rev the car hard - I just wanted to know what you would regard the safe limit.

I understand max torque is around 2200 revs.

Cheers

dont go over 4.5k theres no need to go over about 3 really When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

There is a RPM limit speed programmed inside the ECU firmware, so, in a way, there is no "max safe rev limit".
The engine ECU won't let you go over a certain RPM speed.
But as the max power is dropping quite rapidly after 4000, there is no point in going over that.

engine is governed you can use all the revs if you want , not much point though change gear sooner use the torque. At work
At home

Same as what the others have said but just to add that my rev counter has indication of 'broken red segments starting at 4200 rpm and changing to solid red at 4800 rpm, for your information.

Agreed, high revs and all that friction bring no performance gain - better to get back down onto the torque curve!
I hope all the "gentle drivers" never see an MoT emissions check - the test method requires several excursions from idle to the limiter.
Just a note of caution, the limiter works by cutting off the fuel. If you foolishly downshift to too low a gear at too high a road speed in a manual, even with foot off, the vehicle speed can drag the engine speed up and you can exceed the rev limit and risk mechanical damage. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

I won't believe that someone could be that foolish...
Nevertheless, the syncros in the gearbox will have the time of their life in such situation... Laughing

Seen it done the result was a broken cam-shaft, piston's hitting the valves etc. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
Total engine rebuild needed,

Customer said "you can down shift at speed in a petrol" , Didn't know about diesel engines, not liking to be over revved
Big Cry Big Cry was what the customer thought when he seen the bill for the engine be-build. Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Actually the auto box did something like that in my TD5! Shifted down to second at 70 going up a sudden hill. My fault for having it on the cruise control I suppose. Presumably didn't exceed the rev limit, but the head gasket blew soon after - not unrelated I suspect.
