CO2 offset 45000

Can somebody explain to me what this is all about, sticker on car, cost £100 for what?
Is the money for research into global warming?, why 45000?

land rover buys emissions trading schemes to cover what your car is expected to emit during the first 45.000 miles. in theory, this should cut global emissions as the contract is denied from other possible polluters. why 45.000, that you must ask land rover. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE i6

Also includes the CO2 during manufacture and the 45K miles is an average mileage over three years I believe.

Tha aim is to assuage the guilt that we all experience each morning when we push the start button of our shiny new cars. A lot of hot gas if you ask me (194 g/km to be precise). I asked my dealer if I could opt out. He said yes, but I wouldn't get the amount knocked off the price of the car.

Some newly created organisation has planted a few trees somewhere for us.

Carbon footprints...blah...global warming..blah.climate change..blah..sea levels rising..blah..ice caps melting...
