Significance of satnav route colours.

When I enter a destination I get 3 route options. Red, yellow and blue (I think). Often, at least two of them and sometimes all of them show the same time or distance to my destination. What is the significance of the colours, if any? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

To highlight the route on the map? Makes it easier to see the three routes than if all three routes were the same colour?

P47 of the manual which just happened to be here says they are three alternative routes.....

I'm guessing things light shortest, quickest etc.

The route summaries give calculated mileage and time. The colours are just to be able to identify each on the map. Too small a scale to be of any real use IMO. Just choose the one that looks "right". A bit crude I know, but it is no Tom Tom is it? 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

I have a TomTom and a Garmin but I think I prefer the LR one! Bigger screen, that green stripe countdown (instead of actual distance) to the next turn, split screen and cuts out the stereo when giving instructions in a rather sexy voice! Great for 'cloth eared' types like me. It currently has the 2007/2008 satnav discs. Would an upgrade to 2012 discs be a worthwhile investment? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

I upgraded to 2011 discs which covers a lot of road changes plus also seems to add some more detail, although I may be wrong there. No change to the operation though. Preferences re Tom Tom, Garmin, Navteq etc are very subjective. Yes the LR integration is excellent, but I just note that with the LR (Navteq) when you deviate from the chosen route it cannot replan the whole route, it just blindly tries to return you to the original route even if it is longer than it could be. I just use it on "silent" as a guide to time & distance mostly. For any "real" sat nav work I use the Tom Tom. To each their own! Wink 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

When it blindly tries to get you back on the route and you know that from where you are it is quicker another way, re programme the unit to your chosen destination again and it will then recalculate the shortest quickest route and not try to get you back on the original route.

At least the Tom Tom won't take you in to Lay Bys as shortcuts when the TMC sensors indicate heavy traffic Evil or Very Mad

Does anyone have the TomTom TMC add on device, is it worth it?

I have one - you can have it for free....my latest tomtom doesn't need it as it is inbuilt. Honest answer is although it works it isn't as good as the latest systems.

Do you know if it will work with the TomTom Start 60?
There seems to be two different units out there, why does it not work as well as the new ones, what is the difference between them. Had the system years ago on a Vectra, you could tell when a report was put out as all the Vauxhalls would brake and hit the next slip road Laughing

That is a very generous offer Richard, lets see if its compatible Thumbs Up

I've got both, inbuilt factory fit Tom Tom with TMC and a Tom Tom XL with the add on, the inbuilt system works much quicker and more reliable than the add on.

Steve.
The three colours are just alternative routes. The bar at the bottom of the screen gives you the time/distance info so you can select your preference.

The update to 2011 or 2012 discs gives better functionality, for example cancelling route guidance is much easier. I upgraded from 2007/08 discs & found it so much better. Plus it'll give you newer roads.

Finally, if you give it enough time it will recalculate your route if you divert from its guidance, but it is still quicker (as others have said) if you cancel it & re-enter your destination.

Agreed, Tom Tom is much easier to use. Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!
