Full tank cost and mandatory 28mpg

Called in at Shell last week and decided to fill to brimming from 4 miles left in the tank. Used Shell fuelsave at 145.9

It cut off at £94. Computer claimed 355 miles until empty but having done 75 miles it said 335 miles left so 410 miles at current rate of progress.

The thing is, I have seen low 40's MPG if driving like Miss Daisy but as soon as I so much as sneeze it drops to mid to high 30's at best. Then it will reach the mandatory 28mpg.

The other day just to prove it, I drove like Miss Daisy on the A38 with air con off and at 65mph in 6th. All was going well into the 40's mpg. Got to work which involved a small amount of town driving and then did the reverse route home later with no change in manner of driving and there it was! 28mpg.

We don't buy LR's for economy but my car is obsessed with 28mpg. Even if I thrash it and use sport mode...28mpg. Laughing 60 plate SD4 XS, Stornoway Grey, Arm rest pack

33.7 is my magic number. If I drive at 60 on the motorways can get 35-40 but as soon as I do mixed driving and hit 70 always averages at 33.7... Freelander 2, 2014 Dynamic SD4 Santorini Black

No matter what, I get to about 34mpg sometimes a bit lower, had it reading 90mpg the other night Smile pressed the reset button at the start of a long 3 or 4 mile generally downhill section of my route home but by the time I had done the up hill section too, it was at 38mpg but after some varied driving last few days has now settled around 34mpg again.
My wife jumps in and drives revving over 2500rpm, I usually change around 2.5k max unless in a hurry, and bump up to 36mpg, not sure how she does it?

I never labour the engine but always try to be gentle but cannot get it above, no motorways down here to do any sustained driving but when I have gone on them it sits around 38mpg.

If you only got £94 in at that price it wasn't empty...could keep going a bit Thumbs Up

I did a 500 mile tank (just!) which included coming home from Scotland a couple of weeks ago, the fuel pump did click off at a ton though Big Cry

Our number it sticks at is 34 Confused Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Having recorded every drop into the tank for 86000 miles and 188 refills on my 2008 XS (09MY), I can report an average of 38.94 MPG calculated (min 32.79, best 43.65). Average of all trip computer readings over the same period was 40.1

Average for the first ~3000 miles in 13MY is 38.95 (!), min of 37.35 on the first tankful of Morrisons frmo the dealer and max 41.60 (SHell since first fill) Average of trip computer 41.1

I have to say I spend a lot more time on the motorway than supposedly saving fuel on routes that trigger the stop-start. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

Mine always seems to say 35.3 whatever. I have just set myself up an excel spreadsheet to calculate tank MPG and overall MPG by just entering the ODO reading and fuel added. It is calculating at 34.1 but different tankfuls vary on use. It seems to do better on warm dry days and we haven't had many of those lately. I only use branded regular diesel and am adding Millers currently. I was reading an ESSO fuel specification sheet last week and that indicates that they change from winter to summer diesel at the pumps and back on 16th March and 16th November. Cetane number is higher in summer diesel so maybe better MPG due to that. Usually keep aircon off unless needed. Try to keep right foot down to 70 if possible. Certainly much above that hits fuel hard. If anyone wants the spreadsheet then send PM with email address and I will send it.

The difference with summer & winter diesel is primarily the Cold Filter Plugging Point. This is the lowest temperature that a given amount of diesel will still pass through the cars filtration system within a certain time. (not to be confused with Cloud Point)

CFPP is obviously lower on winter diesel than it is on summer diesel to take into account the ambient colder air temp to stop the diesel clouding / gelling.

A reduced Cetane rating in winter diesel reduces the ability of the fuel to auto-ignite, a process that eventually leads to lower fuel economy, sometimes only a slight change, sometime a drastic drop. A diesel engine has no ignition system, the fuel itself must be able to ignite under pressure - the sooner the better.

Its the refinery blending of the additives to reduce the CFPP that reduces the cetane number in winter diesel.

Roll on Summer................

I filled up today with 0 yes zero miles on computer tank took 70.21 litres over £104. When I used to drive horse boxes regularly the pumps used to cut out at £100!

lol.... just made my day. I've been trying to track mine and their seems to be no logic 31 odd around town then 32 on the motorway.

Also turning the AC ON increases the range!

I'd be intrested in knowing how the MPG is calculated... ie the last 25 miles... instant or other.

Mine usually indicates about 37-38 mpg, on the trip computer. Which is almost always spot on when filling up and the maths done. This is with a mix of my smooth driving style, and my Wife's accelerate until brake style. Usually over an even mix of town type driving, and a steady 65 mph (ish) commute to work.

£104 to fill a tank! Shocked
I thought fuel prices were excessive in Australia, I think you guys in the UK are paying roughly about 35-40% more for your fuel than we do.
