Clutch/DMF issues with no warranty

My 2008 FL2 is suffering from the dreaded DMF issue and I tried to call LR Customer Care today but the agent I spoke to had never heard of the problem. Their advice was to speak to my local dealer but I wondered of anyone had successfully claimed or part-claimed from LR for this issue despite having an expired warranty? My local indie quoted £980 to replace the flywheel and clutch so anything I can do to reduce that has to be worth a shot. Sad

Thanks
Ben

Think you will struggle to get any contribution.
All you will get told is take it to a main dealer and let them look at it, at somewhere around £100+ vat per hour. LR are not interested

Welcome to the expensive world of the modern IMHO "unreliable"landrover .

I have managed to spend over £2.6k in 8 months on repairs to the diff and a seized engine on a 2008, with full main dealer serviced freelander 2.

Worst purchase of a modern car, I have ever made but still love driving the dammed thing....grrrr.

Defenderben,
There's me thinking I had it bad, 5 months of ownership of my 58 S & only 5 faults Laughing None covered under Land Rovers used warranty. Front wheel bearing next job on my list. Won't be paying for a dealer to do it Laughing
My wife mainly drives ours, I just repair it Laughing
Most I've ever spent on a vehicle too. I still love driving it, especially in the snow & ice Thumbs Up Landy has now gone.

Ben,
Have you tried a indie Land Rover Specialist? Landy has now gone.

Apart from a £70 misdiagnosis from a main dealer , that was after an hour with the computer to tell me my hdc fault was a faulty canbus and required approx 4hrs to investigate further. Took it to an Indie and in 15min diagnosed diff pump failure.

All the rest is fixing it via an Indie at £43 + vat per hour. In fact my engine seizure would have been at least £8k with the main stealer as they would have just replaced the engine. They would never of bothered with a full strip down and rebuild.

Sorry to hijack you thread but stay clear of a main dealer I.less you have a full warranty with them.

Defenderben,
I agree. When possible always stay away from the stealers. I either do the work myself or use an indie. My prev 4 faults none covered under warranty. The dealers wanted £120 to have a look each time, run their diagnostics basically. I stayed away from them, sorted the issue's myself. Used Land Rover assist once, due to a clogged fuel filter. They diagnosed the prob for free. Cost me £42 for the filter, which I'd change myself next time. If I'd gone the dealer option, would have been £250 all in. The other three faults, I sorted myself. Just the bearing to do at the mo.
Benjam, I apologise for hijacking your thread. Landy has now gone.

The person you spoke to at LR Customer Care is having a laugh. There is no way they are unaware of this problem with the clutch and DMF - just check out this forum. I suggest you have another go at calling them, you are very unlikely to talk to the same individual.
Is your dealer suportive? If he wants the work he should be backing you up to get LR to pay for part of the job. He must have done several of these so providing evidence for LR if needed about the problem
Worth finding out what an indie would charge all the same. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

Prior... 2003 G4 Discovery 2, 1998 Disco 1 and 1997 Disco 1 Company car before that
Also gone in Nov'13, after 7.5 yrs, to new owners with time for more TLC - 1980 Series III 88

Wales 2012 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Orkney Grey

I agree that the Customer Care rep is having a laugh My 07 SE has had two clutch failures, the first at 27k which was repaired under warranty, the 2nd at 57k and 5 years which I discussed with LR Cust care and ended up with a 50% contribution, about £500 towards clutch flywheel and slave cyl replacement. Did notice more pedal pressure on the new unit so they may have done some mods to the cover.

Keep on to them they do have some budget for out of warranty failures.

Have just traded it in against a 2012 SD4 HSE Auto, pick it up next week.

Thanks all. Tried LR again and they told me that all claims needed to be routed via a dealer so i found a local dealer that had experience of FL2 clutch issues and will see what they can do. Worst case they will be £300 more expensive than the cheapest indie quote but they are confident LR will play ball plus I get some extra piece of mind knowing that the work is totally underwritten if the replacement subsequently fails (and a loan car).

Well done, sounds like you have an interested dealer, let's hope it is all sorted at a sensible price:-)

My problem was complicated as finding the cause of a seized engine could have been difficult and as LR customer care said they thought at most a 25% contribution but that was pending the main dealers report and was not a guaranteed contribution, as my fault was not common.
Spoke to main dealer and they started talking new engine at around £6000 plus labour charges to remove and refit the new engine before they had even seen it so had little faith in a fair strip down/appraisal of the fault. Replacing the engine was an easy answer option.

Luckily I found a really good independent specialist that pulled it to pieces and replaced all damaged parts and rebuilt it for a third of the price of a new engine. I now have a good trust relationship with him and he will get all my future LR works on both of my LR's.

Good luck.

Just been reading up on DMF's all very interesting Smile
Is there a single flywheel option available for the freelander as a direct replacement, it looks like someone, namely "Valeo" is producing such a product for ford Mondeo and VW's?

Just checked Valeo conversion list and we are not on there Sad they do the freelander 1 and loads of other makes. (GONE) FL2 2008 SE (manual) Santorini Black, the expensive one Sad

No solid flywheel to my knowledge, anyone know of it? Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
