WTD: 110v Transformer

Got given a electric cement mixer, but no transformer

I think its a 110v one I need, anyone have one laying about unused or know where's the best place to get one? Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I have this one

Check to see if there is a rating plate as you can get ones that deliver more watts.

I'll have to have a look for a ratings plate, don't want to have it under power or shove too much juice in to it and blow it up

Good idea on hire shop too Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Jewsons, any electrical whole sale shop like wilts, city electrics or similar. Check rating plate on machine, this will tell you voltage and running currant needed for machine. Then get one rated slightly higher and your away. Protect yourself, as machine maybe 110v but the supple to trannie will be 230v and needs RCD protection

Get a 240/110v centre tapped output transformer at least 1KVA continuous rated, be aware that most KVA figures given are intermittent rated.
For the minimal extra cost though I would get a bigger one for anytime you want to use a heavy grinder etc

Just remember to get one with the right size socket as my mixer has the larger plug on it (think its 32a) size and the smaller ones are (16a)

Your mixer should have a 16A 3 pin plug fitted. Due to the run time a mixer is running The transformer needs to be big enough to cope with the extended run time. An ideal one would be rated arround a total rating of 2250 VA with a constant run rating of 1250 VA.
There is not much difference in price (arround £50-£60 for transformer). Go for one under rated and it will keep over heating and cutting out with a long cooling don time between use. Also due to the inherent high in-rush currents at switch-on, these units requires a suitably rated anti-surge supply fuse. Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB's) protecting sockets should have a type C or D tripping characteristic.
A domestic house usualy will only have type B mcb's fitted. Because of this you may need to reset the trip in the house a few times before it will hold in. once in and running you should'nt have any problems. On turning off the transformer the mcb in the house may also trip but just reset and all will be fine. Hope this helps
