Hi, Some advice needed please. I have just purchased a Freelander 2 HSE, 59 plate 26K miles, from main dealer. Whilst checking tyre pressures on Friday before a journey to Plymouth, one of the tyre valves broke off resulting in a flat and a visit from the AA to change tyres. My wife was doing this as I am out of the UK on business so understandably she was quite distressed. Understandably, a trip to Plymouth and back on a 50 MPH space saver was out of the question (450 miles). My Q's are as follows:

1. Will Land Rover change the TPM under the 6 month used vehicle warranty / out of good will as we have only had it a week?
2. How much am I looking at if I have to foot the bill?
3. What is the deal with Land Rover assist? Should she have called them out instead of the AA?
4. If one has snapped, is it prudent to get all four changed as I have read on other posts that this is a common problem on all vehicles that have TPMS fitted due to the alloys used in their construction. I will be changing to plastic dust caps as that is another problem I have seen where by the dissimilar metals can weld themselves together.
5. Kwik Fit refused to fit an ordinary rubber valve on Saturday morning as a temporary measure. Was this the right thing for them to do? I realize there would have been a dashboard TPMS warning showing until properly fixed.
6. If ordinary rubber valves can be fitted as direct replacements, should this be done to avoid the hesitation in checking tyre pressures whilst the TPMS are fitted?

Any info gratefully received. This is our first first Land Rover purchase and to have this happen in the first week is a bit disheartening.

Didn't know the UK Spec Freelander 2 had tyre pressure monitoring Must have been an optional extra as it is not a standard fit.

Yes, I would have called LR Assist.

I believe under EU law that if a TPMS system is fitted to the vehicle then all wheel sensors must be working, if one fails and you don't want to replace it then the whole system has to be disabled.

Done some further digging and apparently, the TPMS is mandatory on all American SUV's following over 200 deaths due to incorrect info from tyre manufacturers some time ago. Judging by all the left-hookers I regular see around Solihull on transporters, a lot do go to the States.

UK spec FL2's don't have the TPMS software installed even as an option to read the signals from the individual sensors - somebody please correct me if I'm wrong? There was a surplus of these alloy wheels with TPMS fitted some time ago so UK models ended up with the wheels and sensors fitted but nothing for the sensors to talk to. I have scanned through the owners manual online and there is no reference to the TPMS in it - conclusive evidence?

Anyway, Land Rover have today agreed without question to replace my broken sensor for free which is good news, however, if there is no point in having them then I may revert back to normal rubber valves and continue my regular pressure checks myself. I think the reason why Kwik Fit refused to fit a temporary rubber valve was that it would have bought up a fault code on the cars computer and dash (that is if the software is fitted - they obviously thought it was from seeing the sensor) which from last year onwards is an MOT failure.

Your thoughts???

kwik fit don't know what they are talking about, fitting a normal rubber valve would not have made any different as the car does not have TPMS

Quick update - Dealer has replaced the faulty valve/sensor FOC along with a complimentary clean and valet. Spare is back in its rightful location hopefully to never see the light of day again, albeit for a quick pressure test.

Following extensive googling, I cannot find reference to the complete TPMS system being fitted to UK spec models. This being the case and knowing what I know now, I will probably now replace all the valves/sensors with good old fashioned rubber ones. Does anybody know of any reason why they cant be changed back to rubber ones? Also, who's going to look after my gleaming 19" Shadow alloys the best - Kwik Fit, ATS etc?

I recently had a load of loose wheels re-valved, got charged £10 a wheel by the tyre shop including balancing.

It might be worth trying to find out the age and type of TPMS Sensors you have, they normally cost £50 - £70 each to buy so they might have some re-sale value.

Does the spare have a TPMS sender fitted to it? If not, surely that would put a fault up. My Golf has a version of TPMS fitted and in common with a lot of vehicles, it runs off the ABS sensors - there's nothing in the wheel. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

My Tiguan had same, ABS measures individual wheel rpm and if one increases in relation to the other 3, it gives a signal.... very accurate and saved my butt a couple of times whilst traveling far.

Not sure if the spare has a sensor fitted - not had chance to look yet as still working away.

My better half didn't notice any warnings when the spare was on so that leads me to believe that:

a) The spare doesn't have a sensor nor is the computer fitted with the necessary bumpf to read the signals (aka UK Spec???)
b) The spare (steel space saver) has a sensor AND the computer is configured to read the signals - fully inflated spare = no warning of low pressure
c) Spare has a sensor but no computer configuration to read signals so no warning would be displayed if the spare was to also lose pressure, which it didn't so cannot verify.

Still with me??????

I just want a definitive answer on whether I can swap the sensors for normal valves and put this saga to bed.

As you and others have said UK spec car don't have TPMS, so you can take them off
