United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Orkney Grey
eBay SatNav discs

When I purchased my 2011 HSE SDI at 10 months old the sat nav was already out of date. Can you believe that? The new road, completed some time ago, for the A421 does not show up and neither does the new and complicated double roundabout system just south of Nottingham. I got the 2011 - 2012 discs with the car and you may well imagine how miffed I was when I was quoted something like £180 to upgrade to 2012 - 2013 discs, having just taken delivery of a ten month old car at almost £30,000. I could buy a new Tom Tom for less than the cost of LR new discs.
I also understand, I think, that the 2012 upgrade Freelander 2 does not use discs.

So, are the 'Genuine Land Rover' discs for 2012 - 2013 availabale on eBay apparently real and reliable?

2012MY uses discs, 2013MY uses a hard drive system. 2012-2013 discs could well be genuine.

Just be very careful with the ones on the bay, sellers to tell porkies, the ones below that have just been sold are nearly two years old, sold as 2012 but in reality they are 2011 2012 version and it states they are the latest version, wrong, the current version is 2012 2013 which will be replaced very soon with the 2013 2014 set.

Thanks rchrdleigh. I did know that the MY2013 uses a hard drive which I assume is cheaper to update..?

ad210358, what I hadn’t realised is that the CDs for my car will continue to be issued as updates and that 2013 – 2014 will be available. Thanks for that.

I would have thought that the bar code on the CD case would have been entered somewhere during the update, or installation, making the discs unusable with another vehicle. Is that the case?

No you can swap the discs to other Freelander 2's as long as they are prior to MY13, ive done it, taken out the old ones, put in the updated ones, when I sold the vehicle I put the old ones back in and they worked fine, the later ones I sold on here.

Just make sure that they are Freelander 2 discs, Range Rover and Disco ones do not work in the Freelander.
Make sure that they are what they say they are, current ones are, 2012 2013, if they say they are 2012 discs, the chances are they are 2011 2012 discs. They will be going cheaper now as the 2013 2014 discs will be out in a couple of months.

Installation is straight forward, all you do is remove the old disc and put in the new one, it will more than likely have a Firmware update to do, this can take fron 5 minutes to an hour in some cases, besst to go for a drive round to do it as if you park it on the drive after a few minutes it will display "Low Battery" on the radio and stop the update so really need the engine running. You do not have to do anything else. Normally a set of three discs but you only need load the GBR disc for the UK, this will still give you main roads in most of Europe and put the disc of your choice in when venturing over the water.

Many thanks for all that good info. It does indeed sound simple enough.
On balance then, I think that I will look out for somebody looking to recoup some of the money they have spent on the 2013 - 2014 discs. Come to think of it... it could be a plan to form a syndicate, say four people sharing new discs.

I will be remaining here for the next few weeks, I have the other two discs available as they won't be needed for a while, on a couple of days I won't need the UK disc as I know where I'm going so that one will also be spare, four users, three discs, simples Whistle
