Warranty question

My freelander is 3 years old in march 2013 so thinking about extended warranty. I had a bad experience with a previous make on extended warranty as they claimed it didn't cover electrics even though the car had been back several times while under manufactures cover, and the fault was bodged by 2 main dealers taking a short cut buy crimping the wire ends together and not replacing the whole wiring loom. So I got rid of the car in the end.

How good is the Land Rover warranty and more important what " DOES IT NOT" cover. Accepted fair wear and tear but with only 16,000 on the clock wear and tear shouldn't come into the equation . Third party warranties seem dodgy to me and will try and avoid paying out if a claim is made.

Has any member made a successful claim under extended warranty and if so which company, if anyone would care advise i would be most grateful

I think the LR warranty is reasonable - I have the cheaper "select" warranty and had new rear wiper motor, horn, steering pump. Only thing they have refused so far was the aux belt tensioner. Not sure why, but I suppose they regarded it as wear and tear. You can read the T & C online - they seem pretty comprehensive.

Re: Warranty question

Realspeed,
I bought a FR2, 5 months ago & came with a 6 months Landrovers used warranty.
First problem I had with car was reduced engine performance light appeared, car went into limp mode. The dealer wanted £120 to have a look, run diagnostic. Would not run a diagnostic for free under warranty. If fault occured due to a possible warranty repair, I would have then been able to claim it back. If not a warranty covered repair, I would then have to pay more to have problem resolved. They did offer to give my landy a free 15 min visual inspection, a look around the car Laughing Decided not to go with the dealer option, used landrover Assist instead. Read fault codes, it was a clogged fuel filter. Charged me £42 to change it Thumbs Up Would have cost me well over £200 if I'd gone with the dealer option, as not covered under warranty.
Also had a water ingress leak from rear upper hatch brake light housing. Not covered under warranty. Dealer wanted £120 to have a look. Took it off myself & re-sealed it. Now A1.
Gear stick started making a squeaky noise when engaging the gears. Tracked it down to the gear linkage, I oiled it, Now good. Linkage not covered under warranty.
Last but not least prob. Intermittent drivers side window problem. Window won't wind up or down when pressing the electric button. As it's not a permanent fault, again not covered under Landrovers used warranty.
Perhaps I've been a little unlucky with faults, but none of these covered under their warranty.
So suppose depends what goes wrong, hopefully major components would be covered & you’d prob have to have it serviced by the dealers to keep their warranty. Paying top money for dealer servicing.

I've not had any great experiences with any main dealer warranties, Land Rover or others. All seem to want you to pay out first in the event of a possible claim. In my experience anyway.

How much is the Land Rovers extended used warranty? As mine came with the car when I bought it. not that I've had chance to use it yet.

I’m using an independent next for servicing, just to keep book stamped. Will try my best to keep it away from dealers when it’s out of warranty. I am thinking about an alternative warranty next. Mainly to cover major components. Not looked around yet. Landy has now gone.

Thanks for the replies, Think the warranty money is better in my bank then to keep in case a fault occurs.

Realspeed thats exactly what I did as there was more things that it would not cover than I liked, the factory fitted sat nav and the audio system was not covered.

Extended warrantys are just like insurance policies. In most cases they will wiggle out of them if at all possible.
That said I had a positive experience a couple of years back with a seat warranty through Listers (who also have a couple of Landrover dealers I think). It was a Listers branded used warranty and I made a couple of claims (one for knocking front suspension which was expensive!) and another one or two for minor trim issues. All covered without quibble. That may be down to the individual dealer (Coventry Seat) or maybe it was the Listers chain. Either way I was happy and got my moneys worth. (Coming) 2016 RR Evoque td4 180 HSE Dynamc
(Going) 2013 TD4 GS Auto - Santorini Black with black leather. Cold Climate, UK Lighting & Armrest Packs. Privacy Glass. LR Rubber Mats. Full size spare.
60 000 miles averaging 35mpg

(Gone) 2010 TD4 Manual GS - Stornoway Grey. Sold at 3yrs old & 64k miles. Final average consumption 39.2mpg.

The good side of extended warranty (my old car)

Haldex sensor followed by new haldex oil pump fitted
New tailgate switch fitted
High rear brake light repaired after leak
New rear pads fitted after breaking up
Weird noise coming from front wheel, stripped down and found twig behind disc plate

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, all covered with extended warranty after buying my 07 plate after it was three years old. There was never any hesitation from the dealer, just got on with fixing my car and never cost me a penny.

Most warranties are not worth the paper there written on. For the best part they will try and get out of paying anything.
Unless you are realy unlucky I have found the best bet is to put aside the money you would pay out for this cover and place it in a bank account.
I have saved up a good few quid so any problems I cant fix myself then I have a backup there just incase.
