United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Galway Green

My FL2 (MY 2010) has just over 30k miles on it now & I've never turned the stop/start off. No problems whatsoever with it. I believe the battery & starter motor are upgraded to cope with the additional ware & tear.

So far so good in the first 1200 miles; it sometimes stays on when I expect it to stop and then it stops when I don't expect it (like soon after start). I'll be able to work out the fuel economy differences soon (48.9 average tank to tank over 86,000 miles or 40.1 if you average all the trip meter readings). New stop-starter is 39.3, 42.3 and 41.0 on the first 3 fills.

For those concerned, the starter is beefed up now and there is a different battery to cope with the loads (including lights and stuff while engine is off). I should also menion the clever charging whcih increases the draw on the alternator when the throttle is closed and eases of the loadf when dirving normally. Not really part of stop-start but it keeps the battery up without using fuel to do it. Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

Considering at idle the FL engine will use less than 1.5 litres of fuel an hour, it's hardly going to keep you afloat if you're worried about going bankrupt. Plus, they use slightly more to start than idle, so if you stop, engine stops, and then you need to fire up within 30 seconds or so, it's using more.

Personally I prefer the engine to be running, I can stop it if I want. Good practice on vehicles with turbo's is to let the engine idle for 10 secs before touching the throttle after startup (mainly when cold but oil soon drains down through an engine with the turbo losing out first).

I remember a few years ago driving a Mini that left me stuck in the middle of a main road whilst turning right across traffic, because of the stop/start. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Non automotive boffins have done studies on whether stop start reduces fuel, from memory it does reduce fuel even though some is used to restart the car. If the below link works this was a test using non stop start and a stop start freelander.

I leave mine set to on, but at the moment it rarely kicks in. Someone told me, it needs to switch off for about 3 to 5 seconds and then your saving.

But as already said, diesels are really quite frugal at idle so I dont know how much your really saving in terms of fuel. On the focuses at our work, if your in mpg mode on the display and sit still at idle, it shows fuel usage as "< 0.1 litre / hour ". With thatin mind, I guess you must be saving more on taxes instead.

I use it all the time but as the temp here is mostly over 35c at this time of the year, it doesn't kick in.
My interpretation of what the manual says, it uses and 3-5 secs worth of idling fuel for a restart, so anything longer than that you are saving money.
I haven't worked out the fuel savings but I usually get to around 800k's before the fuel warning light comes on and thats a mix of stop & start and freeway driving.

Boof, another forum member posted this before.

Within that thread there is a link that takes you to a detailed explanation of the stop start system showing what's been modified to make it work.

If you read the other link I posted http://oa.upm.es/7257/2/INVE_MEM_2011_78663.pdf you will also see that the stop start freelander over non stop start is considerably more efficient and that stop start does make a difference. 20% more efficient in the urban environment. The s/s car is less affected by low engine temp conditions and aggressive driving.

Stop start doesn't make it more efficient to the tune of 20%.

The 2010my FL with stop start active is 20% more efficient in the test than the none S/S equipped 2009 FL.

The 2010 FL without S/S active was 12% more efficient than the 2009 FL, so the majority of improvement is engine updates.

The 2010 with S/S active compared to the 2010 without S/S active was 8% more efficient.

Based on Land Rovers (over optimistic) fuel claims, you'll get approx 3mpg in town extra, based on 8% of 38mpg.Realistically this is probably going to be nearer 1.5-2mpg on the urban cycle. Factor in that (in my opinion) that town driving in a Freelander contributes to less than half of the total driven mileage (who buys one as a town car?) then combined economy may, if you're lucky, improve by 1mpg.

I'd rather leave ours idling as the benefits outweigh the negligible cost savings. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Glad you explained that, I'm not very good with the tech. It's a good improvement though and I say well done to land rover considering the car is so heavy. I find land rovers claimed fuel estimates for the manual are spot on if you live where there are few hills, 45 mpg is easily achievable in Kent. I was surprised to find I could only get 31mpg from an auto fl2 courtesy car but 34 from a range rover sport loaner which was a bit of a shock.
