I agree with you Dave

10mpg gain going from a 4.0L petrol to a 2.2 TD4 is not good

What did the J**p Wink hand book say it should achieve?

How can companies get away with producing mpg figures that are so far out in the real world Shocked Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I have just parted with my Nissan Navara Aventura Pick Up.2007 Model,a stunning piece of kit.
2.5L diesel engine chipped up to 210 bhp and it returned an accurate 37 mpg however I drove it.
I hope the 32 mpg I am getting in the Freelander improves as I run her in.

Didn't read the Just Empty Every Pocket handbook, so i don't know their official figures for that vehicle, all I new was that I could squeeze 480 - 500 miles from a tank with carefull driving and it was a 20 gallon tank Shocked

So, now having a 2.2L TD4 I would have thought that the mpg would have been a lot better, but what I can't understand is why so many of us a getting a relatively poor fuel economy whilst others are getting somewhere close to the quoted LR mpg figures.

Perhaps it might change for the better once she's had her first service but somehow I think I'll have more chance of kissing the Pope's do dah's than increasing my mpg with this car. ______________________

Its' the computer working out the average mpg based on gear changes and revs. Switch to viewing overall distance estimate of fuel remaining, you will notice that when driving in a situation of shifting up to 6th gear, the distance shown for fuel in tank increases! Wink Freelander 2 - SE

There are so many factors that affect MPG. I can get on average 10MPG better than my wife in the same car, on the same journey (not an FL2). She matches the curise control mpg, I find it a bit wastfull. I used to have a car with a vacum guage which tought me that sometimes even when you are maintaining steady speed you reduce the concumption by being light on the trottle, and the associated noises the engine makes by making these tiny changes in trottle possition, and this has helped ever since.

Both my wife and myself are returning virtually identical mpg figs and we definitely have different driving styles. As others on this forum have suggested, I'm not hung up on mpg figs but no one should on average getting 20% less than that quoted by the manufacturer. My soon to be part exchanged BMW has a handy MPG gauge contained within the speedo gauge. When I first got the car I thought it was such a waste of time but slowly it made me appreciate how my method of driving affected the consumption and how a slightly heavy foot can make 40mpg into 30mpg without feeling the difference! Shocked

One thing that has baffled me is people think by slowly increasing speed, say from traffic lights, keeps consumption down however I have found by speeding up to a constant speed quicker results in the same mpg.

It might be of benefit to reset your mpg calculator before a journey and when you complete it see how your mpg comes out, around town my Beemer came out at about 27mpg but on a motorway run it would come out over 40mpg, however it I hadnt reset the calculator my average mpg would probably have only come out at 31mpg or so.

I have alos found out that if you dont start the engine and push your car then you will return tremendous mpg of 99.99!! Rolling with laughter

Caterham, now you're talking Bow down Mate of mine had one - we had some fun in that Twisted Evil Twisted Evil I definitely got poor mpg when I drove round the country lanes (at the speed limit of course) Whistle He's subsequently moved to the West coast of the US and now drives like a pensioner 08 Santorini Black HSE manual with DAB and privacy glass

I'm seeing about 32 MPG overall.

I am on tank 7/8, and most of miliege is town based I have to say.

Before Xmas I drove a Focus ST which was awesome, but I saw about 18 MPG on average, put 6 pts on the ol' licence so the writing was on the wall I'm afraid Rolling Eyes

However, I love the FL2. It has more kudos, better image, and far far better MPG!

Funnily enough, I have noticed that my driving style is far more conservative in the Freelander, and my readout is set to the MPG setting and find myself being slightly obsessive about the result.

In the old days (20 years ago before we had MPG calculators in the car by and large) I used to do a simple routine which proved effective:

1) Empty the car of fuel - drive to station before coming to a standstill!

2) Fill the car up and reset your mileage to zero on the trip... stop at the pump cut off point...avoid trickling extra in.

3) There are 4.546 litres to every gallon.

4) Drive as 'you do' until you need to refill at the pump again.

5) When you refill, make a note of your mileage since your last fill up point, and also the litres to get back to the pump cut off point again.

6) Divide your litres at this point by 4.546 to obtain your gallons, and then divide your mileage by the figure you have in gallons. This should then give your MPG.

It's a bit late so I hope I have this right?

I read this in one of the LR magazines a while back, the figures are calculated by putting the car on rollers, and bringing the car up to around 60 - 70 MPH and slowing it back down again! The whole process takes around 20 minutes!

Basically, the car is being accelerated at a rate that nobody would use and there is no wind resistance!

At least, I think that's right! Maverick off disco3!

One feature that most fuel computers have these days (but the LR2 does NOT have) is an instantaneous read out. This information can be very informative when it comes to seeing how different styles can impact economy. Try zeroing the computer before cold start then leave it on 'av mpg', it can be quite alarming when you first move off but in the right conditions can improve quite quickly.

I zeroed the computer before my car's last visit to the dealer, which I knew would involve them driving the car. They covered 13 miles but with an average of just 17.8mpg !! I don't know what they did but I've never seen it that low!!!
