awful noise when turning left

Hi there, my husband and I are new to this forum and to owning a Land Rover - we think the forum is great, full of knowledge and experience and like minded people!

We bought a used FL2 (late 56 plate) just before Christmas but it has developed an awful sound. It sounds like metal on metal. Initially it only happened after being parked up whilst my husband was working a night shift, and it was a cold morning. Yesterday it made the noise on every left turn. I have it on video (sound only, it was dark). Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? We do have a 6 month warranty so it can go back to the garage we bought it from (not Land Rover unfortunately), but we wondered if there was something obvious. I've looked at the threads on steering racks/oil etc but the steering feels absolutely fine and the power steering oil is running smoothly. If anyone has any ideas we would be so grateful, thank you - Caroline

Reading your post I initially thought of the CV joint or wheel bearing but having listened to the sound I wondered if it was the brake disk backing plate scraping on something.
Anyway, welcome to the site and I hope you get it sorted soon. Thumbs Up

Yes, before you mentioned 'turning left' I was going to blame the heat shields underneath that can get knocked onto the drive shaft giving a metal to metal contact noise.
Check that but I would say it is more wheel/brake related.

It doesn't sound too serious - something rubbing on something it shouldn't. I'd turn the steering to full lock (so you can see better into the wheel arches) and have a good look around the suspension and brakes, as well as generally underneath. Look for something which is out of place, or which has become trapped somewhere. Bits of wire, etc, picked up from the road can result in various noises like this.

Hi thank you for your helpful replies, and for the warm welcome! My husband is about to take the wheel off and have a look! It would be great if we can resolve it without taking it back to the garage Very Happy

Everything looks as it should - took both front wheels off, no signs of anything catching or rubbing, so its off to the garage on Monday Sad

Hi there & welcome

I had something similar mid last year, turned out a stone from my drive had got wedged between the disc & back plate giving a graunching sound when I turned right. Maybe this is your cause.  MY2014 SD4 XS

Thanks Scrimple - how did you find out that was the problem?

It seems now as if the sound has lessened somewhat and is a bit more intermittent , so not sure what's going on!

Well I was on a long journey home when it seemed to get quite bad, fearing the worst, I took it to the stealers as I did not have time to investigate it myself.

They took the front right brake apart and then presented me with a nice 2.5cm round stone with a surprisingly shiny flat spot on one side!

Problem solved, cost me Ģ50 quid though for something I could most probably have sorted myself for nowt with a couple of spanners and a screwdriver if I had the time. Still, its fixed now.  MY2014 SD4 XS

Whatīs the noise that you refer? I have a FREELANDER 2009 XS in Spain and one month ago, my dealer changed the right "gearing" ( I donīt know his name in English).

Actully (1000 km more) I can hear the same noise when I turn at low speed. It sonds like thre or four CLACKS...

Thank you all and sorry for my writing.

Hello, the noise of ours can be found on this link http://youtu.be/WyxXgIYY4Ng - we still don't know what it is but it is going into the garage on Monday - it is more of a grinding/shimmery noise rather than clacking.

Hope you get yours sorted - I will come back on here and say what it was - just hope the garage is able to sort it out - turning corners is now embarrassing!

Could the backplate be rubbing the disc?

Funny I used to have the same problem, albeit in another car. Since I got rid of the wife it stopped. Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up

I'd say "stone in the disc"! No doubt as I have had the same. I'd get it seen to asap before it causes damage to the disc. Good luck!
