Has anybody come across any after market Air Filters? Such as K&N (which doesn't list FL2)

Do these give any performance or fuel/MPG benefits to the TD4 diesel engine or are the claims just full of

Something I'd thought of and investigated but as you npinks come up a blank. Have previously used K&N on a Toyota MR2 and it definitely made a difference to performance. Very interested in anyone's thoughts 08 Santorini Black HSE manual with DAB and privacy glass

there is not one for a FL2 but they say the possible could make one if its not listed

at £50 - £80 a filter is it worth it?

ITG make a filter for the FL1. It might be worth contacting them and asking whether they will produce a FL2 filter.

I believe they also make an induction system for the FL1. Being that all ( or most) FL2 owners are within their warranty period and these owners don't want to jeopordise this warranty I can't see many companies producing aftermarket upgrades or owners wanting to fit them. That being said will a filter affect the warranty.

I asked Mantec about the warranty situation with fitting their sump and tank guards. They said that LR are currently testing these guards for the FL2 G4 that will be released in 2009. They also indicated that LR will shortly be approving these guards for fitting to vehicles. I also asked whether they will be producing a snorkel and they said 'no' as they haven't been asked (by LR).

A couple of things to mention on filters.

Aftermarket filters can be washed generally which means your intial investment is high but over time can pay off, and this is the main reason for having them except on highly tuned vehicles.

Dependent on the type of car and induction system arrangement performance may improve and intake noise may become more prominant (aggressive), however on some cars it also reduces performance.

Some performance filters require oiling and you can find many posts on different forums about the possibility of the oil screwing up sensors (Mass Air Flow (MAF)) in the intake system, none of which is 100% proven I think, but does have its merits against fitting tehse type of filters.

The logo on the filter maybe the simple way to identify a geniune part, but anyone can duplicate it of course, and you would obviously want to tell the dealer not to replace an aftermarket filter on a service.

In theory if the filter has equal properties to that of the standard filter then there can be no warranty issues, however filters are not all identical and paper has different properties to other materials in terms of filtration, otherwise how would it imporve performance......

There are pros and there are cons, and there is nobody that can answer the question with an unbiased view one way or the other.

Had a look at my air filter last night, Just been nosey really

In the air filter housing there is a space below the filter that was wet with a tiny puddle of water I presume it is normal as there looked to be a rubber type valve thing that would allow excess water to drain out and its surrounded in sponge/foam I pressume to soak any water from the air intake

Then to top it all off i dropped my filter into a puddle and had to buy a replacement only £8 though  Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Performance Air filter

All engines are can be considered as pumps, the more air fuel mixture flow they can achieve, assuming the correct air fuel mixture is maintained, the more power they produce,

Naturally aspirated engines respond more to induction and exhaust improvements, but forced induction (turbo or supercharged engines) are less responsive to these changes because the flow rate is mainly controlled by the the boost pressure generated. The only real advantage to an air filter change (in performance terms) would be a marginal reduction is the spool up time of the turbo, and a little less load on the turbo drawing the air through the filter.

The only real way to see worth while improvements in power is to increase the boost, and deal with all the problems that brings.

My comments obviously don't address the other advantages after market filters bring, like better filtration, and increased service life.

I think trying to improve the performance of a FL2 would be a very uphill struggle, and a air filter alone is going to make little or no difference, you might as well leave the spare wheel at home to gain the same effect.

I also believe if you want a faster car, just buy one

After reading this post I just checked my air filter and after 9500 miles it's black!!, not just dirty but more of a soot covering. gave it a quick brush but will replace it ASAP...............thought it might have made it to it's first service in july without having to change it early  ______________________

As you may have read, i had a noisy at my filter, it was like UKDaves, very very dirty, I actually droped mine in a puddle and thought i would better replace it, I am glad i did, my in town mpg went from 18mpg to the normal 25mpg that i had when i first got the car

I beleive the dirty filter was choking the engine

did you notice any build up of water in the lower air filter compartment? when you had a look

Nope, no water at all, everything was dry. To be honest i wouldn't expect to find water in there unless you'd been through some water deep enough to get into the air intake....i.e submerged

But seeing it as black as it was, was quite a shock after only 9500 miles...........at least it's cheap enough to replace on a regular basis. ______________________

the weather was really bad and been up in richmond area the country lanes had loads of big puddles nothing too serious, no floods were driven through, just big big puddles that splashed and throwed water all over the bonnet

This would suggest that at your mpg improvement has come for fitting the air filter correctly an Air filter should last 30K normal road miles no problem in the UK.

The thing is the turbo is the biggest influence on the engine, and will draw the air through the filter, the amount of air is measured and then the correct amount of fuel is added (based on the ECU settings for all the sensors and the map). If the air entering was leaking in some way and causing an incorrect Mass Air Flow reading, then an incorrect amount of fuel could be delivered and this might explain your MPG. If this is the case thank god it was not the other way round and running the engine lean.
