just press the button without foot on the clutch a couple of times and then start as usual.

I remain unconvinced that this makes any difference. The documentation is ambiguous, but the way I read it is that the glowplugs won't be energised unless a start cycle has been initiated. Logically, why would they be? If you're not about to start the engine you don't need the pre-heat and would just be wasting battery power!

Just tried this in -3C. First time with ign on the glowplug light stayed on for about 4 secs, second time for about 3 secs. On the third time I started the engine and there was no delay, so the glowplugs are energised without the full start sequence being initiated.
