FL2 been professionally polished

Why do that? The car only has 165 miles on it - it cannot be more than a week out of the dealer's prepping bay. I can see the sense on a year old car but not on one so new. How can carbon have a footprint, it has no feet?

i can't see them on my grey car, but black shows up lots of swirl marks, and having the paint correction done gets rid of them and gives a mirror like look

Though on this one it looks to have just a decent wax/polish applied and buff with the electric buffer

waiting for the weather to improve and mines getting the full treatment (apart from paint correction), all done by myself Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I know the guy that did this job, he is a prefectionist, his work is absolutely first class.

There are different opinions about the value of these treaments but carrying out this job on a new car there is very much an element of the 'preventive' about it. It's amazing how quickly the swirls can build up from what you might call ordinary 'bucket and sponge' washing (and regular full contact automatic car washes). This sort of treatment can help to keep that at bay from day one. Now some folks will put a value on that other wont. its a matter of personal choice. Myself I haven't got the discipline or inclination to get carried away with this sort of thing, but, I can certainly appreciate the quality of the job done.

This detailing 'lark' is becoming increasingly popular ..... as for my car then one of the few things my dealer does well is the mini valet it gets whenever it goes in for either service or warranty work; so I guess there is some advantage to the trips I have to keep making to the dealer.

When you see his before and aftershot on 'brand new' cars you realise that what a lousy job many dealers do. A guy that washes cars at a dealership typically doesn't have the inclination to do the job a professional detailer will do.

I have looked through a lot of the proffessional valets work from run down astras to ferraris and even a Phantom and they all had swirls etc and these lads leave the car spotless. I don't think just this guy is everybody who takes up this leave of work must be a perfectionist.

Some even do the dealers prep job for friends and family as the dealers can't spend the time they do to get them to the same level

Many of the guys that get into 'detailing' have a real eye for detail (many have OCD tendancies!!) and thats what makes them so good at what they do!

I'm not a detailing fanatic by any stretch of the imagination, but I am interested in keeping the car 'swirl' free. In fact i'd rather the car went an extra week looking dirty, than do a quick clean job that left swirl marks, yes I guess I'm a bit OCD in my own way.

As I said I know the guy that did the FL2 job, in fact the wash fluid I'm using at the moment came from him, along with a few tips about keeping the car swirl free.

Me, yes I'm keeping well, still towing a c.......n from time to time. I still love every mile I drive in the FL2 but as I've mentioned elsewhere the niggling problems and ownership experience leave a lot to be desired. At 34K miles my motor is well run in, and mechanically performing very well. You may have seen my posts about mpg's it really is astonishing to be making 600 miles on a tank!! I've got 15 months to go with his car, sadly I'd say it wont be repalced with another LR.

it's the swirl free look that i wish to keep, thats why i started looking at the detailing website, 2 bucket method and a wool mit, also just got a decent foam lance and some super foam

I have quite a few niggles with my FL2, and will insist they are looked at by the dealer, my bug bare is the slight rattles, the continuing beep of the parking sensors that keep comeing back due to water ingress into the sensors.

The mpg is quite low, i was getting 18mpg round town, but since i dropped the filter in a puddle and replaced it i am now getting 26mph round town, so i presume the car was choking on the dirty filter

Cars going into the dealers next week for the sunroof fix and rattle, parking sensors and fuel gauge telling me i had a empty tank when i knew it was half full, going to have them look into why the airfilter compartment was wet in the bottom of it, Is this normal?

I am seriously thinking about not going FL2 next, but i still have a couple more years to decide, though i would look at staying with LR, with a D3, depends on what TAX i would need to pay Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

My view on detailing...

You might not think it affects you (like I always thought) but put your car under some direct light (sunlight worked for us) and unless you've 'detailed' your car you're bound to notice swirl marks and/or scratching. I did just this and look what I discovered:

Now I'm far from being a detailer but I'm working on it and it was discovering this 'damage' that set me off. I now try to clean the car regularly and have a much improved wash technique (2 bucket method, wash mitt, Autoglym product, Karcher powerwasher to remove most loose dirt etc...). Every few months after washing the car I now apply AG Super Resin Polish to try and fill in some of the scratches and swirls and some Extra Gloss Protection to add to the gloss and so hopefully over time I'm removing some of the evidence.

You don't have to be an obsessive fanatic to look after your cars paint. I, however, am starting to turn into one though - a direct consequence of joining that Detailing forum I think...

BUT - the plus side of this is that the car is gradually improving and you now have to look a lot harder to notice the scratching. The other elements I've gotten into (tyre protection and glossening etc..) also makes the cars stay gleaming for much longer, which is nice. Recent evidence below:

Dealers generally arn't good at preparing cars, so even your brand new vehicle is likely to come with paint damage - easily repairable through detailing. Really, a bottle of SRP and EGP (about a fiver each) was all that was needed to clean up the state of the Volvo. I think it's worked... "CY from DISCO3"

I agree nothing wrong with looking after you paint

I took delivery of a decent foam lance the other day, foam and leave for 10 minute and it makes the cleaning a whole lot easier. The 2 bucket method helps with getting rid of the dirty from the wash mit
