Did they take a swipe when you left the car, or have they done previously to debit/ credit a penny? Hotels do this on entry, then on exit it speeds up the process, they verify the card, put the new balance on and away you go. |

Each card transaction when 'Customer present'requires a Chip & Pin - i.e not internet or phone- check with your Bank to see has it been debited or has it been 'authorised' and thus awaiting application to your account.

I have had this a couple of times, normally when they are having problems with their machine. They have always mentioned that they will do it as if a telephone transaction. Sometimes they get by the usual procedure by using the 3 security digits on the back which they have if you have given them your card. |

It's also happened with me in the past but each time I was informed that the 'keypad' machine was faulty and it would be put through as 'customer not present'. Once this was explained I accepted it but watched my statement. |

You don't need to enter the PIN number in order for the card to be used.

big-al-cove is not disputing that as the 'bill' was clearly paid and accepted, it's clearly not what he was expecting as would any other person paying a bill 'face to face'. We all expect 'chip and pin' keypads as it is not a distant transaction and when it doesn't happen we question the way it is done as it can be open to card abuse. |

There are other ways around it as well, (but best not to enlighten some people) used to be in a service Industry and some of the the "tricks" were unbelievable , suffice to say if I am paying by card I wait till the machine is in front of me , the amount is entered and use a tri-fold wallet to shield the keypad, and make sure no one is behind me , I remove the card from the machine not the vendor.(if yo check your card some assistants / machines can be very rough with cards scratches and bend/ flex card to see the number, open to cloning only takes a second to double swipe a card and bam gone )

Interestingly enough, whilst at Stratstone Burnham last week paying for my oil, they swiped my MasterCard rather than chip and pin insert the normal way....mine went through no bother either, and I didn't have to sign for it. Foraging near Gaydon....
