You can enter a card number and do it like your on the phone, but never heard of them been able to put your card in and have it authorised with out a PIN number

What's it say on the card receipt? Normally would say verified by pin, unless you use contactless but I doubt the service cost less than 」25 Laughing Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Did they take a swipe when you left the car, or have they done previously to debit/ credit a penny? Hotels do this on entry, then on exit it speeds up the process, they verify the card, put the new balance on and away you go.

Each card transaction when 'Customer present'requires a Chip & Pin - i.e not internet or phone- check with your Bank to see has it been debited or has it been 'authorised' and thus awaiting application to your account.

If it has been debited you could 'dispute' transaction if it is applied to your account on basis you didnt authorise it - the Bank will claim it back from Dealers Bank- but you will still have a 'legal' debt for the cost of service.

Guess if its not gone through your account dealer will call some time when they try to 'balance' the books !! 2011 XS,Sumatra Black, GONE MARCH 2014- RR Evoque Prestige 5 door ,MY 2014,Loire Blue, Silver Roof, Panoramic roof.

checked the receipt and it shows the last 4 digits of the long number, below customer not present (i was there i handed the card to her) and underneath APPROVED with a authorisation code

by using this method of payment all security has been bypassed (pin number and secure check out used online normal asks for 3-4 letters at random of your password)

i am not disputing the payment BUT i have learned one thing NEVER LET YOUR CARD OUT OF YOUR SIGHT if its that easy for someone to take payment any untrustworthy person working in a shop restaurant could do the same and you would never find out until you checked your statement 1995 P38 now dead

I have had this a couple of times, normally when they are having problems with their machine. They have always mentioned that they will do it as if a telephone transaction. Sometimes they get by the usual procedure by using the 3 security digits on the back which they have if you have given them your card.

It's also happened with me in the past but each time I was informed that the 'keypad' machine was faulty and it would be put through as 'customer not present'. Once this was explained I accepted it but watched my statement.

You don't need to enter the PIN number in order for the card to be used.
The PIN is not used for transaction validation purposes.
The PIN is for the teller to verify that it is your card and you are you and not anybody else trying to use your card.
It's like any other information that is usually known only by you and helps verifying that it is you.
When you make a purchase online, did you enter the card PIN? No. But still you can make the payment. So, there.
For transaction purposes only the card number and security code on the back are needed.

big-al-cove is not disputing that as the 'bill' was clearly paid and accepted, it's clearly not what he was expecting as would any other person paying a bill 'face to face'. We all expect 'chip and pin' keypads as it is not a distant transaction and when it doesn't happen we question the way it is done as it can be open to card abuse.

There are other ways around it as well, (but best not to enlighten some people) used to be in a service Industry and some of the the "tricks" were unbelievable , suffice to say if I am paying by card I wait till the machine is in front of me , the amount is entered and use a tri-fold wallet to shield the keypad, and make sure no one is behind me , I remove the card from the machine not the vendor.(if yo check your card some assistants / machines can be very rough with cards scratches and bend/ flex card to see the number, open to cloning only takes a second to double swipe a card and bam gone )

usually have a big bag of 2p coins to pay for fuel .. 400=」80 easy Rolling with laughter

Interestingly enough, whilst at Stratstone Burnham last week paying for my oil, they swiped my MasterCard rather than chip and pin insert the normal way....mine went through no bother either, and I didn't have to sign for it. Foraging near Gaydon....
