United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Narvik Black
uh oh - there is a rumble in my rear!

I have a horrible feeling my Diff might be on its way. Just noticed today a rumbling noise at about 30 - 40 mph which was getting intrusive.

Its not all the time however and when upto speed (around 50 - 70) it either goes away or is drowned out by the tyre noise. I did notice however that when I heard it doing around 30mph if I slip it into neutral and role to a stop the noise can be heard all the way (albeit decreasing in pitch as the car slows)

Does this sound like my diff bearing? or could it be something else?

My car is a 2007 Auto with 80k on the clock. I had the Q106 fix done at about 50k miles and hoped this would be the end, but clearly not.

What is the damage if I keep putting miles on it without getting it sorted? Am i likely to Censored the diff altogether or am I just going to notice the noise getting worse?

My instinct is to get it in to the garage straight away but my wallet it saying ignore it and hope its just the tyres!!!!

Any advice? I have read all the other threads and everything is telling me to get it checked - dammit Big Cry Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Had mine done back in March last year, cost to replace the pinion bearing was around £400 ar TVLR, i knew something was wrong, but got a mate to have ride in with me and with in a few yards of driving he could hear it as well,

I would pop in to your local garage and ask them to have a look could be a Wheel bearing, Diff or tyres. Best to get it checked out Thumbs Up

Cheers Tony - thanks what I'm thinking

Did yours rumble all the time or was it only certain speeds? I've got a few 200 - 300 mile trips coming up soon and I'm not going to get chance to get it into the garage before hand. I'm just wondering if I am risking knackering the diff if I dont do anything soon?? Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

If it is the Diff Bearings they will go from "is that a whine" to "yes it Censored is" in less than 1000 miles. I used to notice mine more on slowing down at 30 to 20mph.

Problem is if you drive it much after the whine appears with bearing on its way out could affect the pinion gear meshing, so by the time its done you might need a new gear set as well as the noise will still be there after the bearings been renewed?
Mine went from silent to a real good groan in under 200 miles.
Took them 4 hours to replace the bearing.

...agree with MG...sort it out ASAP otherwise there could be damage to other bearings or pinion/crown wheel....just did mine pinion bearing today....quite easy job...took me little more than 4 hours but I am trying to be extremly precise when working on my own car.... Very Happy

Cheers fellas, you've kinda said what I thought already - you reckon a 300 mile trip will be too much? Mrs worm is taking it to Wales tomorrow!!!

Out of interest - how big a job was it to do it yourself? What tools did you need?

Also has any one had it done and been charge less than £400 for it? I want to get a feel for what I might pay and if I should go main dealer or indi?

Dammit ! I was doing so well as well! Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Rear Diff noise - I think?

I also have that rumble from the rear that many of you describe. My Freelander has done about 67k and is now out of warranty. So my next step is to ask my local garage for a repair quote as Hatfields Land Rover in Liverpool estimated a labour charge of roughly 6 hours work at £124 per hour plus parts on top. It seems that a straight replacement bearing is likely to fail again due to the inherent design of the diff. I feel I'm throwing good money after bad and am rather angry with Land Rover for not recalling the car.
So my question is, should a local garage not be willing to take on the job can anybody recommend an independent garage or engineer who can carry out this repair in the Merseyside or East Lancashire area.
Thanks

I don't know any independents in your areas but if you want a guide on what you can get the parts for look here:-

When mine was done under warranty, the Tech came out with me, said it was Diff Pinion Bearings, thought to be caused by over tightening of the Pinion Nut, went to the Service Reception and said to the young lady at the Desk, Pinion Bearings, Warranty, Four Hours, so where are they getting six from? If you have had the car a while and full Dealer Service get the to ask LR for a contribution, if you don't ask you don't get, you may get 25% towards the cost.

So roughly £160 for the repair kit and now I just need to find a transmission specialist that doesn't charge solicitors prices.

The 6 hours estimate came from the LR technician. He'd dropped my car back to me after it had spent the new year stuck in the dealership awaiting a new door latch after the other failed, again just out of warranty. That repair was £240 for a door strip down and latch replacement.

Thanks for the feedback.

One would hope the replacement bearing is of the same size but of higher grade so it will last a lot longer, never asked my dealer if it was exactly the same, otherwise expect it go every 50000 of so??

Not nessacerily, the general line of thought appears to be over tightening not a weak bearing.

...have worked today on a customer's 08 Volvo XC90 and found its drive line system to be almost identical to ours - the same auto box from Aisin-Warner,the same Haldex unit and most interestingly the same rear diff. The only difference is in fixing points of the diff (have three instead of ours four) and "VOLVO" badge instead of ours FoMoCo.Anybody knows if XC90 drivers have the same issue with their diffs ?

So, it would seam that my diff is playing games and has since gone quiet again. I was convinced it was on its way. Having two new tyres fitted tomorrow (£300 for a pair of GY wranglers Exclamation ) and wondering if this will make any difference....

This is why I am reluctant to go to LR - like my steering rack if I go in saying it is making a noise, they will lookup the tech bulletin, tell me I need this thing doing to it and potentially leave it worse than it started!!! Not forgetting the cost.

I'm going to hang fire for now and see if it gets any noisier as everyone has suggested. Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints
