Xenon lamp/bulb -> ballast replacement.

Hi guys!

One of my xenon headlights of my 2nd hand Freelander isn't working anymore.. In my previous car i didn't had xenon, so it's all new for me.. If possible I would like to find the problem myself and replace the bulb by myself. In this album you can find 4 photos of the xenon-equipment in the lamp-housing: http://patriek.com/impressie/?album=1&gallery=7 Wich parts do I have to unscrew to see what type of lamp it's about?

United Kingdom

unscrew the two bolts on the top of the headlamp, pull the leaver on the back to release the light itself and slide forward to access

you then pull off the rubber cover, replace the bulb

The bulb is a D1S

I'm slowly becoming ill of the whole xenon story... I ordered a new original Philips bulb, but that didn't seemed to be necessary. With the new bulb the light still didn't work, so I changed the ballasts and saw that the problem must be a broken ballast. I had to use my brains better.

I contacted a big online Xenon dealer in NL with a good reputation. He sent me a new ballast (photo) that looks almost the same as the original one.. But this ballast has 2 problems:
1. It's too thick. The whole lamp-housing can't be slided into the front of the car.
2. The light flickers. It doesn't burn continuously and during the flickering there's sometimes no light at all.

I called around but I can't find any company in NL that can sell me the original Philips ballast. Even the lighting department of Philips NL can't help me and suggests me to call to the UK.

Does anybody know where I can buy the Philips ballast of the following photos? photo1 photo2

It wouldnt surprise me in the least if you have to buy a complete new fitted out lamp unit because they dont supply the bit you actually need as a separate part.
You know, like the ballast is specially made for Land Rover.

On another listing they say the Freelander 2 one is the same as the Ford Focus and the Aston Martin DB9 try Dan At Duckworths one of the site sponsors.

Do you have an auto lights on switch, if so try operating without, could be low voltage on the battery when starting causing the ballast not to work correctly.

I sent a PM to Dan Smile

I found exactly the same ballast like I have in Bulgaria: http://www.ebay.nl/itm/Ford-Focus-ST-MK2-I...460b880518

Low voltage mayn't be a problem.. I started the engine with lights off and turned the lights later on. The original ballast works perfect, so I think I just tried too cheap ballasts.

I'm curious which brand of ballast Land Rover supplies officially nowadays, because the Denso ballast seems to be genuine too..

Dear Patrick,

I've had a damaged ballast problem 2 years ago. Due to faulty glow plugs, the engine would not fire up with temperatures just above 0 degrees. The continuous starting cause probably voltage drops and peaks which damaged both ballasts. As I could not get ballasts only with the LR dealers (only complete new head light units (600,- each) with a delivery time of a few weeks, nice in winter time Wink ). I ordered below ballasts at " Xenon Jan". Only issue is you have to make a new connection because the + and - are swapped. Find below the link.

Good luck,
Richard

I think Philips were supplied on 06-09 then denso after that, Denso are OE now so should be straight swap as per AD ebay link Thumbs Up
