Noticed a trend with some new cars lately (mostly VW, Audi, Seat) and when they make a turn at a roundabout or junction for example, one fog light will illuminate. So if turning right, the right fog light briefly illuminates.

It's a separate bulb in the fog lights that illuminates around the corner in a much pronounced way than straight ahead fog light.

I thought it was illegal to use fog lights unless the headlights were on as well.

Not sure it is illegal, as the foglights are intended to be used instead of, not as well as.

They will probably disappear when the novelty wears off, remember the dim dip headlights back in 1986ish so you couldnt drive on side lights only, if you tried, the headlights would come on half power as soon as the engine was started?

My 1999 TD5 90 had the dim/dip headlight thing...easy to disable though. My mate's FFRR has the corner light things. John

The same goes for the fog lights themselves these days. They used to be useful because the beam definition of dipped headlights was so poor, but with modern headlights they're just not needed. I can't think of a single occasion where I've found fog lights alone better than dipped headlights. In fact, in all the years I've had fog lights I've virtually never used them. They're just one of the many things the marketing department makes us think we need in order to extract large amounts of extra cash from us. |
