Problems with 2008 Freelander2 TD4 SE

I have owned the vehicle for approx 2 years without problem until just recently. Having poured over other entries on this forum, other people seem to have suffered from the same problem I am experiencing to a greater or lesser extent.

My vehicle starts & runs Ok but after covering a distance of 5-6 miles starts to lose power & has on a number of occasions stalled. This is accompanied by a message on the display of "Reduced Engine Performance". These events have all been during periods of low ambient temperature (sometimes down to -4degC).

If the vehicle is stopped & allowed to stand for a few minutes, the warning on the display disappears & normal running resumes for another 5-6 miles whence the cycle repeats itself.

Could my problems be down to low battery voltage affecting the EMU as ascribed by other subscribers to this forum. As far as I know the vehicles software is fully upto date, I had the vehicle MOT at the dealers last year & they told me they had done a software update at the same time.

any fault codes stored? might be worth having it checked and read after the car does it again, if it does it again?

Thanks Wizking, just read the threads you posted directions to & indeed the threads do seem to have something in common with my fault.

I notice one thread mentions the fuel filter & I have drained it to check for water. Its a real b***** to get at & I lost a deal of flesh in the process but didn,t get anything significant out.

I did contemplate changing the whole filter but apparently you need a special hand pump service tool to reprime it, the pump alone cost £330 + Vat (internet search) + the cost of the fuel filter of course.

The wifes reluctant to drive it at present as it cut out on her on a very busy dual carriageway, so reluctantly I think I'l have to book it into the dealers to see if anything comes up on the computer

Just out of interest, were the symptoms exactly as I described? My first instinct was that the fuel filter might be the cause, restricting the supply to the HP side of the injection system. that might explain why switching off & restarting restores normal operation as the Hp side is repressurised albeit slowly.

yes the same symptons took it to a small LR independant they put it on the diagnostic came up with a code relating to fuel pressure, they changed the cheapest thing first which was fuel filter which sorted the problem all for a £120 Thumbs Up

Before going out and spending a fortune get the car on a diagnostics meter. There it can be checked for any fault codes stored. If failing that then a series of atuator tests can be carried out to check operation of various parts along with output readings being recorded.
From what your saying it seems like a fuel problem either air locking or high pressure fuel pump.

Draper 43904 fuel pump (£15) can be modified to work.
Best if you can nip to a breakers and get the ends of the fuel line between the filter and the pump to make a leak free connection.

Certainly beats spending £350 on the purpose built unit. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Hi Andy,
Thanks for that piece of information. I must admit I thought the £330 + VAT for the official service tool was way over the top.

Like a lot of other official service tools I don't know how they arrive at the prices.

For £30 ish you can buy the fuel tube with fittings from landrover and with a hand pump make up your own bleed tool for your car.

Just a quick update on the proplem with my 2008 Freelander SE. The fault was quickly traced to a blocked fuel filter which has now been changed.
In passing the man at the garage reported that LR & BMW dealers here in the NE of England have been inundated with vehicles suffering the same fate.
LR technical department are apparently investigating what is causing the problem.

Again many thanks to those members who posted suggestions & replies to my problem.
