Hi all, my first post and help needed already please.

Just bought a used 07 gs auto 35k miles , I expected some gremlins but Ill address this first.

After google searching the tailgate problem I removed the switch and yes it was full of limescale, so I cleaned it and refitted it after a good grease.

It worked for the best part of a day and after the last few nights of -5 c temps it seems to unlock every time I set off in the car

So after a good few slams it will close but its bugging me.

So is this more than likely a new switch job or something else, as the switch springs looked like they had plenty of power in them to release the catch, Im confused.

Change the switch, £30 and thirty minutes

Also make sure the bump stops on the tailgate are correctly adjusted. They should be enough to stop the gate rattling but so tight that they put the lock under tension Ralph

The water in the switch will have started the corrosion hence it triggers the mechanism hence it opens the tailgate.

maybhe there is something in the latch or a twisted door seal but the switch is still most likely cause At work

Thanks for the info Ive ordered a new switch.

But for the record how do you adjust the bumpstops?

Because I the problem started as I couldnt close the door without slamming it and I thought something was trapped or a bumpstop problem, but the stops either side of the catch just look a fixed width without a facility for adjustment.

You can rotate them by finger and thumb on my car. I put a piece of masking tape on the body where the bumpstops contact it and then back them off till they do not mark the tape. By rotating them half a turn at a time , both together, you can get them perfectly balanced. I continue adjusting until there is a complete black ring on the tape plus half a turn. That should give you the right pressure to ensure the tailgate is sealed but without putting strain on the locking mechanism. hope this helps. Ralph
