Scotland 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Indus Silver
replacing battery

I think our battery is due to be replaced as is struggling slightly now as 5 years old, have used a Ctek charger on it but not really made a difference, is it OK just to swap over or will it get all confused and put warning lights on and need to go to Landrover if I do so, heard so many horror stories about changing batteries in different cars, or it it just a case of needing my radio code and swapping

Just go and swap it and all will be OK.

No radio code needed.

You'll have to set the end travel of the windows and maybe to set the doors' unlock mode (one click opens all or second click) but all these are clearly stated on the user's manual, page 42 (Single/Multi-point entry) and 94 (Windows Reset).

Just done this. A couple of pointers:
Get the right battery type. Most cars have a "normal" battery but stop-start have a more expensive type. There is a recent thread here - try search.
Consider getting an uprated version
Euro carparts currently have 15% off (Promo code BATTERY 15) and a £5 voucher if you bring the old one back.
You will need to swap the breather pipe - pull out of old battery, lever plug out of new one, insert.

On replacing the battery what about then resetting the battery monitoring system in the ecu???. Ive done this for other people who live near me.
I have a diagnostics meter with dealership access to the ecu and many other programming fuctions etc etc. The battery monitoring system shoud be reset to take into account of a new battery fitted. Thumbs Up

Maybe the start/stop systems have this battery monitoring system...
I don't have it so I don't know squat about it... Sad
But anyhow, are you sure about this resetting? Your neighbors also have FL2s?

Yes alex,
mines a 2008, plugged in meter last week and was having a look at historic fault codes etc and doing a few actuator tests and thought I would have a look at the battery settings.
Didn't think older cars had them but options came up repacing battery? reset monitors? looked at info on this and it states a reset should be performed on battery replacment. This only needs to be done for a new battery. If you dissconnect your existing one and then reconnet it thats fine as nothing has changed. In the settings it lists type,currant rating even the date it was fitted etc.
From what i can tell when a new battery is fitted either from new or replacement it monitors it through out its life, just thought I would pass this info on Thumbs Up

Alex, mines an SD4 so no start/stop and had a new battery fitted at Easter, LR Assist reset mine and ticked a few boxes also. Thumbs Up

Had my battery replaced a couples of weeks back and I seem to recall the tech chap telling me that they have to tell the car it's got a new battery Thumbs Up

From what I know, the battery type, current rating, etc. are stored into the CCF.
They're all needed for proper charging strategy.

And also:
1. A battery is a battery, no electronics inside.
2. For lead batteries, the same charging strategies are generally used/needed during their entire life.

Since I've installed my on board voltmeter, more than 2 years now, I didn't notice any change in the way the system keeps the voltage across the battery. Therefore, I can say for sure that the way my battery was charged hasn't changed during time.

So, as a conclusion, I don't think that the system is charging differently a new battery than an old battery and when I'll change mine, I will do it myself and for sure as long as, when the engine is running, the system, based on various factors, will keep a proper charging current / voltage, then I am/will be sure the battery is/will be kept in good running condition. And more than sure, I won't do a reset.

Maybe those settings / options / procedures / etc. are there for all types of cars. For the ones that doesn't have the system(s) they do nothing, for the ones that are equipped with various battery monitoring systems will reset something.

Hope we'll still be here after 4-5 years and we'll know then who was right and who wasn't... Laughing Laughing Laughing

You were right.
Only for the cars equipped with Battery Monitoring Systems, a reset is needed to be performed on the BMS system. The BMS is fitted only on Start/Stop systems.



So as long as the battery doesn't have something like this below on the negative terminal, then it could be changed with no fear and no need to reset anything.

I don't know FL2 batt management in detail. I assume that if the battery voltage drops below a certain threshold, then the interval between stop/starts events is adjusted accordingly.
Don't know if the system uses hysteresis or is a simple voltage only. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.
