Freelander 2 Intermittant Starting Fault

Hi All

New to the site and have just got a 2nd hand May 2007 TD4 HSE with 8,000 miles.

Absolutely lovely truck and good off road, BUT...........

Two times now the car has failed to start. The RC is put in, foot on brake, button pushed...and nothing Censored . Car was then left ( Wife had to go to work) and when I got home it started straight away.

It happened again this morning and I expect it to start tonight with no problems. Painfully unreliable when the Wife has to go to work. Dealer is looking for a bulletin on this, but I would prefer it to just stay dead so the fault could be found.

My Wife said that when she put her foot on the brake there was no give in the pedal and hence the car wouldn't start, but if it was a vacuum issue why would it start later on....odd Question

Has anyone else been through this and found the issue?

i've had a non start on my manual, this was started by LR Assist (flat battery) and a software update stopped the problem Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Thanks npinks.....it's strange becasue all the electrics work and car starts again when left so the battery is fine. I have enquired with the Dealer regarding software and (because I asked him before I bought the car) all necessary updates have been performed.

Had the same proble with both of ours. Both sorted by 'system upgrade' at the dealers. Suggest you go back and try them again. 2009 Grey HSE Auto

if it happens again i would call LR Assist out and let them link the car up to the machine, and see if there is a fault code and test the battery (mine was working fine and then started once LRA arrived Rolling Eyes )

They normally out within the hour, so you may have to wait till the time it does it when the wife isn't going to work Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Will do.....sounds like it is going to require some troubleshooting Censored

I specifically quizzed the Dealer on LR reliability issues and thankfully he isn't avoiding me, and he is somehwat apologetic.

Righteo.........Got home tonight and car failed to start Censored . Tried both keys and after 4 attempts it started. No resetting of trip, all lights working including lamps etc...... Smile small mercies!!

Called Landrover Assist. A very helpful chap turned up within an hour and thankfully when we tried the car again it didn't start Laughing I was perversely happy about this. Solenoid was clicking but car engine wasn't turning over. We kept trying and the car was spluttering but would not fire.

Anyway, he pulls out a lamp and white stick (not kidding), reaches into the car and starts tapping the starter motor latch Question and low and behold the car fires up. He tries it again and the same again. He is adamant it's the starter motor. Have now organised a courtesy car and pick up for Firday morning Cool.

A couple of comments he made was that generally the F2 is the best Land Rover for reliability out of them all and strangely enough said it was also technically the simplest Thumbs Up

Hi

I have a manual Freelander which would occasionally do nothing when the button pressed. Dealer said new software dowload will fix. Got download on Friday - waiting to see how it goes. Grumpy

START BUTTON

Mine failed to start yesterday morning. I'd booked it in for its first service, and because I'd set off early, and arrived before opening hours at the Land Rover dealership, I had enough time to stop to buy a newspaper, and rather conveniently less that 100 yards from the dealership, the start button failed to respond. SO, I phoned for assistance. The helpful mechanic told me I had immobilised it, and I had to agree with him, because the trip etc did not go back to 0. Anyway, when I went to the dealership I was told that the software upgrade would cure the problem a lot of Freelander 2 owners are experiencing. So having paid £233 I went away thinking that all would now be well. Guess what, this morning it did not start and all trips went back to 0! It is a lovely vehicle, and I would not want to be driving anything else, but i am a bit disappointed.

No reply yet from Dealer.....I will update when recieved.

I have been driving a Range Rover courtesy car and it is quite refreshing to have a key.

On another note, you do get some funny (not envying) looks from people and whilst parked on the North Downs Way last weekend someone scribbled 'wa Censored er' in the dirt on the rear windscreen.

I am going to put a sign in the window saying....'Don't blame me it's just a rental' Whistle

The FR2 is the perfect compromise. Freelander 2 TD4 HSE

I've been faced with this problem a couple of times too. Each time it happened I was in a hurry. It is vital to take your time to start the car. After inserting the key, wait 2-3 seconds before pushing the start knob.
If you don't, you risk to cause a system crash.
(which of course doesn't mean there are no other possible causes)
