Almost got flooded today. Had to unblock road gullies. Discovered a farmer had dug a trench out of his field and all the water/soil was running down the road.

Wonder if he applied to the environment agency to get permission to create a watercourse. That drip of a landowner would be completely liable if your house flooded.

I'm not taking sides and I don't know the full story or the lay of the land, but the storm overwhelmed his drainage ditch and unfortunately his or gods actions nearly up someone else's property.

So if I was in that situation and seen what was happening I would divert that away from my house and rub my hands in glee in seeing it re-join the gully and disappear down the road, but in doing so I may put the next house further down in jeopardy.

Would that guy blame me for my actions, if so why? I'm only protecting my property and can't be responsible for what happens further down the chain in unusual flash flood circumstances.

On saying that, the farmer should have been up to offering to help clean the mess on your lawn even if just to be neighbourly.

I definitely wouldn't be 'taking advice' as one put it, too much of that mentality in this country.

The farmer might have lost money on washed out crops so was trying to protect his investment, or ended up with a water logged field and unable to sow the seed, so he tried to save it

Unfortunately, his actions and that of the weather lead to Greg been nearly flooded, If he thought about it, was there any other area he could have dug his ditch

Either way, a near miss and I bet there was a period of panic thinking the worst might happen, so now is the time to think of a strategy to save the house if it happens again, starting with making sure the gutters and water run off is clear, it might pass it on to the neighbour, but they should do the same until it reaches the main drain or river/run off
