I have never run less than 4mm... The legal limit here is 1.6mm in summer and 3mm in winter.. I dont know how anyone can let their tyres get that bad though.

Heres a video to watch and just think about for a second... (Warning some people may find it disturbing, there is no blood etc, but the video shows a car dissapearing into pieces after sliding into oncoming traffic)

You really can put a price on the life of your loved ones and others on the road.

Agreed, I never run less than 4mm, and always change all 4 tyres at the same time....[/b]

The sad thing is in that video, he/she didn't seem to have done anything wrong to promote that skid. No brake lights, nothing erratic just loss of traction.
Central reservation barriers can be a life saver in this instance.

Looks to have hit the slush in centre of road. Would be enough to cause the loss of control.

2010 Freelander 2 TD4_e GS Manual Zermatt Silver

yeah, it looks like the right hand side of the truck had no resistance and the left hand side was being slowed down by the slush, starting the slide. Imagine if it had been a car full of kids coming the other way.. terrifying.

So, to ASJ... would a nordic tyre have helped him at all here (like a hakkapiletta with no spikes)?, or would a european winter tyre with serious evacuation grooves running around the whole tyre have given him a better chance?

Have not a clue my friend, it looked very much like the vehicle rode up on the snow/slush/ice and as it rode of the other side it loost control, so what we will never know is what tyres it was running on. Maybe a studded tyre would have been better so you are in a better postion than me to answer the question as we don't use studs, I only use rubber and chains.

A little link for you here which is a little longer than your video which was sent to me last night, your footage is included and shows many winter accidents which make you go cold.

What this goes to show is that it matters not what tyres you have it's how you drive in the conditions and in most of these "SPEED KILLS"

Very graphic foottage so not for weak stomach's................Watch if you want. Andy.
