Poor machining/design, sharp corners propagate cracking, a very small radius would probably eliminate the problem. |

My local independent specialist LR guys were selling off "for spares or repair" an engine with this exact problem. It was an 08 with about 48k on the clock! John

Alex - Just came across this after reading a post by Toadshall about the Ford spec 913 oil.

Is there a mod to stop this issue happening (e.g. replace with new design fuel pump and camshaft?)

Our colleagues have changed the exhaust camshaft with the new design.

I thought about changing the camshaft and pump on my 07 car. However, as it seems that the damage starts with the pump seizing/partially seizing I have gone for the controversial option of putting two stroke oil in the fuel so that the pump and injectors get a bit of extra lubrication. I am not getting into the debate about whether or not 2 stroke gives more mpg or a smoother engine.....decide that for yourself, but what is now beyond question as far as I am concerned is that to-day's diesel fuel is "drier" than before and hence does not lubricate as well.

Modern diesel is blended with 10% bio-diesel (to save the earth ), which, as JST rightly mentions, does not lubricate as well as 'proper' diesel. This is the reason we can't use bio-diesel in our tanks.
