Crash tests

Ive just been looking on youtube at the crash tests for the freelander. Does anyone know if the cars that are used are complete cars? What I mean is do they have a working engine, complete gear box etc installed? Could the car be driven before the test?

Yes they have to be complete cars else the test is not realistic..the positions of fixed components can alter the crash deformation/protection

Is every model tested of FL2 tested? There's some serious money smashed up! I know its all for safety but wow the money that is smashed up must be phenomimal.

No just one model in the lineup, but don't forget the models tested actually cost the manufacturer very little after margins, taxes etc are taken off.
The positive result far outweighs the cost.

I wonder if there's a scrap heap somewhere where Jo public can get the left over bits for free? Lol. I was impressed with the YouTube clip I watched, looks a solid car.

Think you'll find the engineers go over everything in detail to see what effect the crash has on each part and then the parts will be junked or if reuseable they'll go into test vehicles.

A lot of pre production and prototype cars are crushed too, which is a shame as many would have unique features that never made it into full production.

Not true - a friend of mine picked up a former experience car recently. My understanding is they go back to LR, get a thorough overhaul and are then auctioned off.

Agree with rchrdleigh. Worth noting that even G4 / Camel trophy cars have been sold on in the past - these are not engineering / crash test vehicles, they have just been well used by their "one former owner" Laughing

The crash test cars are all cars that you can buy in the showroom. Including different specs.

A lecturer of mine at university was head of crash testing at Jaguar at the same time, and said the crashed 60 Jag XF's before they were put on sale, and that's just Jag, Ncap do another few!
