United Kingdom 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black

Ive found out that these cars are fuel efficient only when warm. Whilst cold first thing am I push the stalk and the most I can get is 15mpg. Wait till the cars warm so guage is in the middle then press the stalk again and it will sit at 40mpg. It doesnt like being cold so I try not to use her on short runs now as it takes 3-4 miles to warm up this time of year.

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

Just done a 200 mile trip to my sons on the way there I averaged 33.1 on the M6 but on the way back I got 38.1 I have an 08 freelander 2 TD4 with auto and have had it only 3 weeks. I was a bit disappointed with the outward figures and after reading all the posts re 2t oil I decided to try some I also checked my tyres and found they were approx 4psi below standard but am not sure if that was a dodgy forecourt air pressure machine. My money is on the tyres being low and if that is the case then 38 on a motorway admittedly at approx 70 mph will do me but I must admit I do fancy investing in a tunit box this will make a good motor really good

United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

My frl 2 is a 2.2 auto 08 plate with 8.5k on the clock since my previous post I have had a Synergy tuninng box fitted and also started using Millers in the diesel a couple of weeks ago a preston to carlisle (70 mph) run achieved 38.9 which was okay but I felt I could get more last week I fitted a K & N filter and on the same run yesterday achieved 45.3 ( average speed was 69 highest on the motorway 80 and the lowest 50 thro road works).
I am amazed at this and as I have the Synergy set at 7 I am wondering if a lower setting will improve this I cannot believe that a filter would have made such a difference and in my opinion the improvement is a combination of all three changes starting to bed in. This has def made a good car even better next step a leather retrim

Picked up my 2nd FL2 on Sunday - went for the auto this time Thumbs Up

Done 80 miles so far and average 36 mpg - did not expect it to be this good Shocked

Using command mode to change up early on open roads and auto in town.

I went for the manual last time because I was worried about mpg but now wishing I got auto sooner. From 44 to 32mpg. And poor high revs compared to others ...

When I goy my new my12 in March, my first tank fill managed 44 mpg to work and back ( 20 mile trip on a roads). Second fill a fortnight later, managed 38. It has slowly got worse and I now average 32 doing the same journeys.
I have a few theories, one is that I am now used to the car handling and therefore drive harder.....although I have sort of discounted this theory as I recently did a 100 mile journey on a motorway in cruise control at 65 mph and still only managed 38.
My second theory, is that during my first month of driving, I added millers fuel additive and this has maybe influenced the mpg calc or something else........ A bit of a shot in the dark, but I saw no noticeable increase in mpg that week, in fact it dropped a couple of mpg if I remember correctly.
My final theory, and the most likely, is that these modern cars learn your driving styles and adjust accordingly. Also, the mpg calculation probably trims and tunes itself at every refill. In hindsight I should have calculated the mpg myself rather rely on the mpg meter ( I.e. via the fill to fill method)
I was hopeful that the mpg would go up once the engine was run in, but after 6000 miles, I see and feel no difference.

One final comment, have others noticed how quick the fl2 runs out of puff after getting to 3500 rpm. Other modern diesels have a much higher rev range (typically an extra 1000 rpm). I wonder if this is the same in other cars this engine is used in. As far as I can gather, it's actually a ford/Peugeot/Citroen 2.2 engine.

It's a two tonne brick, mpg is not really relevant, I used to get less from an Austin 1300 years ago.
Peak torque is just under 2000 rpm, there is no reason to rev it so high to make progress.

For what it's worth I average 37 on motorways at a speed of Censored

Peak torque is delivered at 1750 rpm and peak power is delivered at 4000 rpm in a 150 bhp TD4 and 3500 rpm in a 190 bhp SD4. Without knowing which engine you've got I'd say running out of puff at 3500 rpm is about right in a TD4 and a bit early in and SD4.

If you've got an auto box it will learn your driving style over time and in a modern diesel engine 6000 miles is hardly run in.

Mine when new used to return between 23-26 and remained so fo around 10,000 miels . around 14 000 mile sit started loosening up and rose to mid 30's.
now at 21000 miles it can average 33 and on a long run of 3-400 miles can return 42-43 mpg driving steady about 65-68 mpg so not bad really. As soon as you take it to 70+ the MPG drops like a stone.

Just done a 450 mile journey, constant 80mph using cruise control for about 400 of those miles and managed 30mpg in the FFRR which isn't bad for a 4.4l V8 3 ton beast Thumbs Up

Supprised that some people with new(ish) FL2's aren't getting that much better mpg Confused ______________________

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Baltic Blue

1104 miles on my 18 day old SD4 tonight...averaging 35.2. I have yet to exceed 85mph in it, and as the mileage v time owned would indicate, this is mainly Motorway mileage, trundling along at between 70 & 80 in 6th.

If it improves, then that's a bonus, but that's not why I bought it in the first place...MPG is good enough for me. Very Happy Foraging near Gaydon....
