Looks good, but takes up a lot of boot space Shocked

Used to have the IC-703 installed in the D3, base unit was mounted in the boot cubby hole and the front panel on the dash, but alas no room in the FFRR for anything Big Cry

Do you work HF at all Question ______________________

yes do run h/f with Yeasu ft 857(better than some other radio,s as can use down to 10.5 v without getting feed back in the radio like some other makes .

The setup in the pictures is with 2 batteries because I was out all day and running a cross-band repeater for local RAYNET group, and needed extra BACKUP...

Usually only the black battery case with the rig runner and battery indicator ,so not very bulky, radio is situated in the spare wheel well next to full sized spare , plenty of room

Battery comes with "Quick Disconnect terminals" for quick changeover, will never wire direct to car battery after getting very close to running vehicle battery VERY LOW after a 2 hour pile-up on H/F ...!!! now always plenty in reserve as well as strops (for pulling BMW X 5 drivers out of ditches...!!)

SELL the FFRR and get a Feelander 2 (more money in your pocket to buy more radio,s ... simples ..!! ) Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Rolling with laughter Whistle

Hi Mudslinger

I (G0VTX) am always wary of using RF near the FL2' electronics.

So far I have restricted myself to 5watts FM on a hand held in the front seats, and 5 watts SSB from a mag mount on the roof.

There doesn't seem to be any concrete advice in the LR handbook.

I assume you are using higher powers without any problems. I would be interested in your reply.

What impedance is that very thin cable that connects the rig with the antenna?
Seems something like 75 ohms instead of usual 50 ohms...

Sell the FFRR Question Shocked ...............NEVER Exclamation

Got a portable system in a flight case consisting of a FT-817 & tuner, 7AH gell cell, balun & long wire. That works ok for me as a portable setup.

As for the radio room, TS-950SDX, FT-897, IC-703, IC-706, FT290 Mk1 & 2 and a few other bits and pieces Thumbs Up

I could soon get my hands on a TS-50S.
What do you think about it?
Is it OK for a newbie/apprentice in ham radio area?
Who knows... maybe we'll meet on the waves... Laughing

Ham radio antenna mounts and aux power Pictures at last ..

right a few questions to answer.

1.No alex the coax is RG 174(mini) 50 ohm pre made to specified length terminated each end as well (can put a link in if site boss ok,s it ) as for TS 50 there are better radios available, PLEASE look at the specifications.. one,s that need least amount of current on receive and work to lower voltages are better, (more operating time ) some go down as low as 10.5 v before the audio distorts and you get feedback into radio.

2.as regards higher power I have no problems (as yet ..!) because rig is in the spare wheel well in the back, remote head unit and only short run of coax to radio , also only control voltages to head unit, hence no rf feedback, BUT have had strong noise when using h/held radio when mobile in front of car (close proximity rf getting into freelander circuitry around sat nav .not good..!!

3. Mmm with that set up dave I guess you are a "Mountain Goat " S O T A and beyond maybe..???

lastly this is what I have gleaned after several years going mobile, IT IS NOT a definitive guide, only what has worked for me ..much more cleverer people than me have written better books on the subject , if it works for me , I leave well alone if not I change it till it does

hope this is of some help
