Check your Airbox (with POLL)

Hi All

Not sure if this has been mentioned before but thought it was important enough get everyone to check.

Backstory, driving home from work in the rain the other night, nothing too deep the engine started having judders at peak toque, in high gears, thought it was clutch issues and traveled home.

Took it to lr and found a soggy air filter and water in the system (not in the engine luckily)

Turns out there is a one way valve in the bottom of the air box, that allows water to drain out but this was missing in mine (57 plate 100k miles) and caused water to be sucked into the box under acceleration.

I would recommend everyone checks there's is still there and working, as could of been costly if it wasn't...

To check you can feel it underneath the box, or remove the filter and look in from above.

If lots of peoples have failed / are missing think we should raise the case with LR...

Edit: Just wanted to add, now its all sorted. Thanks to Micheal Norman at stratstone stockton for bending over backwards to fit my car in with no notice.

Interesting in that I've driven my FL2 through a river where the water was pretty deep and various fords of different depths and never had a problem with juddering or a soggy airfilter.
After my recent 5 year service I noticed that the air filter element wasn't charged for so I thought I'd have a look at it. No, nice and dirty so I'll have to order one. And while I had the filter element out I had a look at the bottom of the filter housing where I found a hole where the one way valve is supposed to be. I've been in contact with Dan at Duckworth Parts Thumbs Up and the valve is not available separately from LR. It has to be a new filter box. Shocked

You can get hold of one way valves for aquariums for less than a fiver, I imagine one of those would do the trick if the whole airbox is expensive. That said, you shouldn't be entering water of that sort of, or unknown depth.
The drain hole should be checked though as the number of times I see people at the jet wash squirting water straight into the vent, obviously with little knowledge of what its for, is staggering Laughing

Hi taz, do you mean the side vents on the car? I have a nasty habit of jetwashing everything on the car and I've had mine for barely a week and wouldn't want to break it because i was a bit over zealous with the karcher Big Cry

The side vent on the passenger side is indeed the air intake for the engine, any water in there goes down the little drain hole, hopefully, its probably best to avoid squirting too much water directly in there as the drain hole isnt that big, if the filter gets damp it will restrict the airflow and performance will suffer.

Jet washing isnt nasty if care is taken, get a foam lance and do it with that first, mine is 12 months old and rarely touched by hand washing, the paint is still immaculate Thumbs Up

I've had this happen after driving over Shap during very strong wind and heavy horizontal rain ( normal weather over Shap!), engine would loose power on acceleration but was fine cruising.
I just nursed it off the motorway so as not to draw water into the engine and it cleared straight away so its possible that more water was being drawn in than the drain valve could cope with.
Thanks for that, i'll check mine to make sure it actually has one or make sure its not partially blocked. Thumbs Up

Already been told that by Dan, but there is definitely a fitting on the bottom of the air box that needs covering. You can see right through it. Probably some kind of diaphram, might even be as simple as a rubber disc on the bottom of the box, held closed by vacuum but allowed to open when off the throttle to allow any water out.

Please state the car your talking about, ie petrol/diesel- year made and model type. This should be the first bit of information for those of us not that familiar with engine guts. Its not that hard to add to the bottom of every post automatically
