What winter tires can I use ?

Hi,

Because the winter is not that far, I need to buy a complete set of wheels and tires. The only type of wheels that fit the budget right now are the 16 inch steel version, yeah, I know they are ugly ...

The wheel dimensions are 6.5JxR16, 5x108x63.3, offset 50. The recomended tire dimension is 215/75R16.

Can I use larger width tires, like for example 235/75R16 ?

I just bought a used Freelander2, so I'm a beginner with this kind of stuff ...

And another question, but not related to tires. If I will use 1:200 2SO oil mixed with diesel will the engine be destroyed ?

Thanks.

'Search' could be your friend, there are numerous threads on Winter tyres -I prefer Vredestien Wintrac's

As for mixing oil...........Oh, soo many schools of thought

I did a search before but I couldn't find a clear answer to my question, if I can use larger width tires, like 235, on 6.5J/R16 wheels.

Thanks.

I always find the site Wheel and tyre bible http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html very helpful for this kind of stuff.

You can use it to calculate the min / max width suitable for your tyres then work out the correct tyre size to minimize roling radius change.

send a PM to ANDYC, he only pops in now and again, but always said 16" wheels are best in snow, so might have more knowledge on sizes Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Steel wheels may not look good, but it's better to damage those than nice alloys in bad weather Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Agreed on steels. Used stock Mondeo 16" steels with 215/55r16 winters on our Mondeo to replace the 235/45r18 summer tures on stock 18" alloys.

Although not identical rolling radius, because both sizes are stick Mondeo no hut on insurance and if I curb it, hit a pot hole, rtc it's not an expensive alloy and even more expensive tyre!

Smaller wheel diameters are usually better in winter because they usually have narrower tyre widths and if the rolling radius is the same will have a taller tyre side wall. This reduces the chances of tyre/rim damage curbing or hitting pot holes.

hope that makes sense.

Few updates. This is my Freelander 2 HSE fitted with KFZ 8465 steel wheels and NOKIAN WRG2 SUV 225/70 R16 107 H winter tires:

Previously it was fitted with 18 inch stock alloy wheels and Continental stock tires.

What a difference ! Now the ride comfort and curve stability are much, much better. I can barely sense the road imperfections. Regarding the curve stability I didn't expected to improve. Maybe because a steel wheel is much heavier than an alloy wheel. A 16 inch steel wheel not tire fitted is heavier than an 18 inch alloy wheel with the tire fitted.

I got Toyo Open Country Winter Terrain tyres fitted to mine via Black Circles. They've been great so far. Although since I bought my car (March 2011) it's not seen a drop of snow...that includes regular trips from Skye to Inverness would you believe. So I can't comment on snow performance. But icy and wet conditions-very good. Pretty quiet too.

Just "popped in" to see what's happening Nick, - lots on tyres and winter wheels which is our favourite subject in the far north at this time of the year Whistle

atlas: 16" wheels are best for snow driving and in these conditions it is recommended that the narrower they are the better they are. Having said that mine are 225/70 R16 and perform perfectly in all winter conditions. 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Blimey, thought I was one of the few to use Nokian WR G2's. Fabulous tyre, used all year round with not an iotta of wear.
Local independant tyre dealer swears by them, he doesn't have to push a brand like CrapFit
Mine are 235/65 R17 108XL V rated. Transformed the car in snow/ice/slush/wet.
Done 20k miles and 6-7mm left

No difference in ride quality than my Mich HP Tour Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Me also, agreed fabulous tyre imo, and if anyone has any doubts about their suitability for year round use, they are marketed as all weather on N American continent appearing on both the winter and summer tire (sic) pages.

When I first put them on to replace a set of Pirelli Scorpions thought I'd gone deaf!

Very Happy Recently Also swapped onto Nokian WR G2's and what a difference from the Conti's I had on before I reckon this is the perfect tyre for the winter. Intending to run all year round so we will see how the do but reports are good on wear and stability. Thumbs Up
