Voluntary surrender of licence

My HGV licence is up for renewal and I'm not going to bother - don't think I'm likely to drive a truck again. BUT, on the renewal form it tells you what to do "If you want to voluntarily surrender your lorry or bus entitlement, or want this entitlement revoked for insurance purposes". I'm just wondering why you might need to surrender your HGV licence for insurance purposes. Anyone know?

Not very up on license issues but could it be that if you revoke that entitlement, your insurance quotes will be cheaper? Confused

Clutching at straws really, perhaps a HGV or DVLA supremo will be along soon with infinite knowledge... LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Surely the insurance company could simply say "we won't cover you for HGV" and that would be that.
I suppose if it were a company policy, they might refuse to cover, say any HGV driver with more than 6 points, and the driver would have to surrender the licence in order to continue driving other company vehicles, but that seems a bit tortuous.
Sometimes employers do have weird policies - mine used to insist that everyone passed a "minibus test" (not the proper class D1 test) but wouldn't let me take it because I had an HGV licence Whistle .

I think it is something to do with insurance against not being able to earn a living driving HGVs. So if you were unfortunate enough to be in that position, you would have to revoke your HGV licence before the insurance would pay out.

Can cost more if you have HGV as you are classed as a "profesional driver" therfore a higher risk, more mileage per etc, I was advised when I passed my HGV not to tell them unless asked.

You never know what they are going to charge extra for. When I retired I told Swiftcover and they were fine about it. The following year they said I could no longer have business use insurance as I was retired, so I told them I work a bit (I do, part time, when I feel like it) and they gave me business use insurance and dropped the premium by 50 quid.
