My 2010 Freelander 2 manual probably doesn't have a particulate filter, a previous post relating to this claimed that if the 8th. symbol of the VIN number is B the vehicle doesn't have a DFP which is the case with my vehicle. I haven't seen a post relating to position or a photo of DFP in situ which would be a fail safe method, I'm sure Alex or many other members can give me a clue so I can substantiate this.Many thanks for your replies in anticipation, Bob.

If you wipe your finger round the inside of the exhaust tip (no connotations please!) you'll know...black soot no DPF, pretty clean it does have one  Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

Don't worry about it Bob...all a DPF does is force you to drive less economically to solve a problem that is pretty minor with regard to most the world has!

FTR, my car doesn't have a DPF either, but a quick look at the workshop manual (download link posted elsewhere by npinks) shows it to be at the front of the horizontal part of the exhaust, immediately behind the catalytic converter. Basically the manifold runs into the turbo, then an outlet elbow, then the cat, then the DPF. The DPF appears to look like a small muffler.

In the manual the cat is purple and the DPF blue - pity it's not that obvious on the car

VIN Position 8 =

Upto 11MY:
B = Diesel non-DPF
C = Diesel with DPF

From 11MY
B = Diesel non-DPF (low power)
C = Diesel with cDPF (low power)
D = Diesel non-DPF (high power)
E = Diesel with DPF (high power)


So to pre-empt the "so how do I know what MY the car is?" question...

Model year identifier "MY" is position 10
8 = 2008
9 = 2009
A = 2010
B = 2011
C = 2012
