Pinging noise

Rolling Eyes
hi again.. since i found the knowledge you guys have is all encompassing.. Thumbs Up
i would like to ask your opinion on the following:

When I pull off in my TD4 there is a metallic engine noise (like pinging - only its Diesel)..
this noise disappears when the revs pick up (2000 RPM upwards)
I hear it especially if my window is open and I drive near a wall (the sound ounces back)

Any ideas on what it might be ?

It happens at cold from approx 1100 rpm - 2000 rpm under load (slightly accelerating)
But its also present when hot

I notice it especialy in 1st gear... ( the road noise drowns noises in higher gears)

Its a metallic noise typical of slight pinging in the old petrol cars...

Don't all diesels do that?

nope.. its not the typical Diesel clatter...
this is a metallic noise at a higher pitch which happens when i accelerate.
I also had a C-Max diesel... no metallic noise.. only the Diesel standard clatter.. like a tractor.

this is a very typical noise found in old petrol engines with carburetors... the slight pinging noise of bad timing.. Crying or Very sad

UPDATE:

today i passed LR and the technician took it for a ride.
Apparently its the injectors, and some freelanders are even nosier than mine (though the new models MY11 onwards have different injectors and have fixed the issue !)

while we were out my fuel gauge went to empty.. although there was 1/2 a tank left.. so its off to get a new fuel sender unit (thank goodness it has 3 months of guarantee left !)

Lucky it happened with the mechanic there.

Normally it would have rectified itself when he took it out only to fail again once you left!

UPDATE
had my fuel sender units and pump replaced under guarantee....
While i was there they did a compulsory software update on the engine management system.
They said there was bad diesel going round...
Moral of the story... The pinging noise has subdued greatly...

Now for the clonking of the exhaust at start up... That never was there Big Cry

They will have removed the fuel tank, so have probably disturbed the exhaust. Take it back!

Lol, its not the fuel injectors, its known mostly as diesel knock caused by compression ignition common to all diesels. Newer cars have better insulation and are much more quiet.
Compression igntion sqeezes the fuel which in turn heats up untill flash point. Petrols dont work in the same way as fuel is compressed but then a spark is introduced at a cirtain time to ignite the fuel.
